Day 226, 2013 - Goblin Valley Scorpion

This one was shot somewhere around one in the morning. I was, as mentioned earlier, battling with the Goblin Gods to give me clear skies to shoot the Milky Way and they denied me. To save the night I went in search of the creepy crawlies of the desert night. I found PLENTY, most of it deadly. My favorite was this scorpion. Its actual size was 1.5 inches/3.81 cm long so using the 40mm macro lens I cuddled up super close and convinced him to say "cheese."

Great image but I am really glad those things do not live around here! :)

This one jumps off the page at you

Walking around my neighbors yard looking at what I wanted to shoot it did exactly that for me - jumped right out.

The other flower is absolutely beautiful as well but part of that is the 3D of seeing it that I just couldn't seem to capture. I think it would work better if I tried my 300mm and backed up to try and get the three dimensions of this flower to pop out too.

Continued... Day 228 - Odd little bug

Saw this little bug scooting along so I had to work fast. It had sand and hairs and whatever it ran into stuck to itself as camouflage.

The Goblin Valley bugs were a concrete/stucco building and on the concrete slab the building was on. The latest picture of the bug with sand stuck to it is the concrete of my driveway. It was working its way towards the light.

I'm really thinking about building a light box with a white sheet stretched over it to attract the bugs to without killing them. Then sitting there with my camera and flash to light from the topside to take their pictures.

A Sears Portrait Studio for bugs.

Day 229, 2013 - Gravestones

Saw the thread on cemetery shots so I decided to head over and visit our local cemetery knowing it would be highly interesting. Highly interesting because here in the west we have a lot of history around due to the lower population of the west not building over things. However, upon leaving the cemetery I have more questions than answers to so many of the old symbols and such, but I will share that in another thread. Here is today's pictures, some young family tombstones from the early 1900's.

Day 230, 2013 - 0015 in the morning bug

Up researching some genealogy stuff with my mother when this colorful bug landed on the door. Ran outside to get its picture as it was moving really quickly.

No idea what it is although I'm sure someone around here does.

I'm always amazed at the texture and dirt you can find on insects at this level. For example, I have no idea what that black thing is at the 8 o'clock position from the eye. You also see all the dirt and pollen on the creatures.

Day 231, 2013 - 1831 Large Cent

I was previously unaware of the existence of this coin until a couple weeks ago when my mother came to visit. It is called the American Large Cent - a penny. This coin is so large an American quarter fits inside the outer ribbed ring showing on the face.
