Day 289, 2013 - Light and Moon Fun

My daughter and I went out to mess around with swinging an LED light around and beating the crud out of ourselves doing it. It's harder to swing a light around than it sounds. While walking back I decided to shoot the moon as well.

LED fun!

This picture shows why I don't like full moon shots... you just don't get the crater shadows like you do in a partial moon for better detail. Sure, this one has detail, but it is flat.

I like the LED shot.

Day 290, 2013 - Spider

Saw this little guy jumping around on some concrete. I think he was part frog. These guys are so fun to watch, they are incredibly curious, and such a cool face that I am going to miss these guys during winter.

Day 291, 2013 - Moon Rising

Yesterday I saw the full moon come over the mountain so I knew where to anticipate it coming up tonight. Set up my first shot for the mountain exposure after dusk before it was dark and the sky still had its color. Then I shot a sequence of shots set for the moons exposure and finally combined the two.

Day 292, 2013 - Moon Morning

So because it's the weekend and I didn't have to get up... I woke up wide awake at 0430 in the morning. Could not get back to sleep so I laid there thinking what should I do? Then it occurred to me, it's cold as crap out there right now which means the moisture will be down here in the desert. And even though I don't like shooting a full moon because so many of the features get washed out; I captured a spectacular shot of the moon showing surface topography (waves, peaks, etc.) like I have never captured before. I wish the down scaled for web looked half as good but it still turned out really well. Looking forward to shooting the partial moons in the cold morning air later down the road.

This is a great shot.
Have you thought of putting the larger versions on a site like Flikr where you can upload much larger images than you can here and still provide link to them in your post on this site. Make sure you copyright them first though.

Chewing over getting off my butt and putting together my own photography website. I couldn't believe all the surface topography I captured. It stunned me.

Thank you for the compliment.

Excellent capture mate, definitely upload the full res one to something like flickr. I too have been considering starting my own site but have been umming and arring about it.

Day 292, 2013 - Moon Rising

Went out to capture the moon coming over the mountain and to do it a little differently than last nights when the clouds rolled in. Cursed them at first, then the clouds lit up beautifully as the moonlight danced. Not even a third of a second later the moon breached the mountain top and completely blew out this setting. This is the one and only shot of a three set burst. The other two the moon light blasted the sensor.

Day 292 Continues...

Had to shoot some kids today, and since I hate pose, look at the camera..., smile, FLASH pictures I suggested to shoot them in their natural environment - at play having fun! Working outside under full sun is what it is, harsh, but the captures were both fun and great. The kids had a blast so it wasn't one of those, "kids you will have fun and smile before I slap you happy" photography sessions. Unfortunately, there was not one moment that I could get all three of them to actually look in the same direction together. :)

This was my favorite of the day.

Day 293, 2013 - Bee

Heading out to the studio to shoot a quick educational video experiment when I see this small honey bee crawling around on the ground early this morning. Figuring the poor little guy is dying, and unable to fly, it should give me the chance to get some great up close pictures as he can't get away. So I scoop him up into a cup and set him to the side in the studio. I get my camera, set up an outside pedestal with a piece of white photo paper. I figured the white paper would help to illuminate the underside of the bee and minimize harsh shadows and the slightly muted direct sunlight (wispy clouds) would help fire up the color of the bees hair.

So there I am, camera in hand, bee on the paper in the sun, I snap four pictures getting it all dialed in the way I want it and the little bugger flew away. As I stood there cursing him I realized he wasn't dying; he was too cold to fly.

Day 294, 2013 - Berry

"If I could save time in a bottle, the first thing that I'd like to do..." is keep that time in a bottle so that I wouldn't run out light so early at this time of the year.

Quick scramble to grab my shot of the day. Love the color, wish the wind wasn't blowing the berries around.

Trying to perfect my technique with the tools I have since the Hubble is not yet available for rent. I think they said Wornish had it rented out right now. Anyway, I'm keeping at it and getting better. This shot was a three stack of exposures to bring them all together rather than trying to twist one photos light levels to what I needed. Overall I think it improved the picture and lessened the "processing" look that can come from a lot of twisting.
