Day 281, 2013 - Focus Stack

I call my thread a Learning Journey. To that point, I decided to do a focus stack. However, I didn't want to create a masterpiece... yet. Right now I wanted to see how good CS6 is at focus stacking. And not just a set of proper photos, but a set of pictures created under poor conditions. To accomplish this task I decided to take the shots hand held. Mother nature also decided that a dose of wind should also be added. To change the focus I just moved the focus point in the viewfinder around to different points.

The first four pictures are what was used. The fifth and final is the stack combined. Overall, I'm really impressed. Can't wait to see what can be done using a proper technique.

Day 282, 2013 - Flash Focus Stack

Continuing to test the range of focus stacking. I was truly impressed with yesterdays test. However, taking pictures to stack using a flash does not work so well and causes some oddities in the photo. This is a slice of that stack made up from ten shots.

Day 282, 2013 - Beautifully Painful

This plant (used above in the unsuccessful flash focus stack) caught my eye when I was riding my bicycle home. However, many beautiful things in the desert will really hurt you, kind of like everything in Australia seemingly will kill you. Not sure why that is that beautiful things will hurt or kill you, but I decided to brave the hurt and bring a piece of this weed home because it was so beautiful. The stem of the plant is striped in vibrant green and a shade of red. The flowers are both translucent and a shade of red (like most males I can't tell you what color that red is so I will just refer to it as a "shade" of red) with a highly reflective surface which presented some picture challenges.

Please enjoy these tiny little flowers with their numerous hidden painful spears.

Day 283, 2013 - Night Rain

Nothing wonderful tonight. Just a gee wiz I wonder what it would look like to shoot the rainy wet sidewalk at night. Nothing spectacular, but it satisfied a curiosity.

Thanks guys. I have been reading Scott Kelbys book on CS6 and it is worth its weight in gold. From that book I learned how to get rid of that horrible yellow lighting. Now I have to revisit my lightning shot shot off this same corner.

Day 284, 2013 - Lens Comparison

I have the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 55-300mm 1:4.5-5.6 G ED with VR and the Nikon AF NIKKOR 70-300mm 1:4-5.6 G and wanted to see how much of a difference there is between these lens and the cost difference. Obviously this is not for my help since I have both, but figured someone else might find this helpful and it was a slow evening.

Day284LensComparison.jpg

The images were edited identically and then pasted side-by-side.

First lens: Nikon 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED AF-S DX VR II Lens - Nikon USA Warranty 2197

Second lens: Nikon 70-300mm f/4-5.6G AF Lens w/Hood (Black) - Gray Market 1928 G

You did a very good job comparing both of these lenses but it must be pointed out that you are comparing apples to oranges here. I know these are the two lenses you have but you are comparing a $120 grey market G lens to a $400 lens ED VR II lens. I know that you did not use the VR but the higher quality I think you probably got the results that you expected. Thanks for doing the comparison, but I just wanted to point out that there IS a big difference between these two lenses and your examples show it.

Agreed, completely apples to oranges. For me, and I figured others might find it of value, I wanted to know if there is $300 more value in the end product. To which someone on an extreme budget might be asking themselves. For myself, it is an unequivocal yes! The apple is $300 better.

Day 286, 2013 - Splash

It's raining outside so I thought I would catch this splash. Funny thing is this was the very first shot and I didn't capture another one half as good.

Day 289, 2013 - Light and Moon Fun

My daughter and I went out to mess around with swinging an LED light around and beating the crud out of ourselves doing it. It's harder to swing a light around than it sounds. While walking back I decided to shoot the moon as well.

LED fun!

This picture shows why I don't like full moon shots... you just don't get the crater shadows like you do in a partial moon for better detail. Sure, this one has detail, but it is flat.
