Thanks for the nice comment! I think our horns are bigger than yours LOL . . . must be the heat!
Sam, what lens do you use for your wildlife shots?
I use a Nikon 300mmF4 with or without a 1.4 TC with either the D7000 or D300
Wow - great shot! I noticed that we have "Long Horns" up here in British Columbia, here is an image of one:

I rented this lens with the new 2.0 aspherical teleconverter. . . plan to use tomorrow on my trip to the Bosque. I was 95% sold on the Sigma 50-500, but after using this lens with or without the teleconverter, I think I may have found what I really want. I'm finding myself liking prime lenses over the zooms.

A 2.0 your going to give up at least two f/stops for the extra reach, with a 1.4 your only going to give up around one f/stop. My research is based on an DX camera body. If I'm not mistaken you shot full frame, so you might be able to make up the difference of a 2.0 with camera settings. From what I read most people use the 1.4. I didn't buy fast glass and a teleoconveter to give up f/stops and take me back to were I was zoomed in at f/5.6.
Actually, Rick, I don't mind losing 2 stops. With this lens/teleconverter combo, the fastest I could shoot is f/8 at 600mm (on a DX ). with the sigma 50-500 mm, fastest was also f/8. so far I find the 300mm with teleconverter sharper and easier to handle even with the teleconverter. But I'll have a better idea after today.
