Caught a northbound Norfolk Southern empty grain train yesterday in South Carolina with their blue Conrail heritage locomotive trailing. This is one of twenty Norfolk Southern locomotives specially painted in colors of the many older railroads that are now part of NS. Maybe someday I can find the Conrail leading a train under sunny skies. [D5100]

Caught some action on Saturday afternoon just west of Raleigh, NC at Cary. The passenger trains have a locomotive at each end to quicken turnaround time at the end terminals at Raleigh and Charlotte. Freight is also to be found here. [D5100]

Great catches Sandpatch. Here in Ohio we have two passenger trains that travel through the state both in the night and about 125 miles away. That push pull set up sure has to make it much easier. No Y or running around the train required.

Love your shot of those NS locomotives leaning into that curve. Are you seeing more trains in your area due to the damage further west in NC?

Thank you. We saw a few detour moves after Helene, but not many. NS's line through Asheville will be restored from the west, from Newport, TN. The damage is so severe that it'll take until the end of January 2025 to complete the work. NS's line from the east through Old Fort, NC and the "Loops" is so thoroughly wrecked that its future is uncertain. Asheville's rail traffic has been in decline for some years now, with through trains running via the N&W main. Additionaly, the Skyland power plant near Asheville axed use of coal, so unit trains no longer run there and a year ago the paper mill at Canton, NC closed. The Blue Ridge Southern serves a handful of local customers via Asheville.

As seen in better days east of Asheville on the Loops at Ridgecrest, an NS westbound is about to enter Swannanoa Tunnel. [12/26/2013, D5100]

Here's the Illinois Central's Kankakee, IL station as found in October 1990. I also tried a time exposure with a mediocre result. [Nikon N2020, Kodachrome]

The Illinois Central's passenger trains were painted in a beautiful chocolate and orange scheme, but as the years wore on, the IC fell upon hard times. It was to merge with the Gulf, Mobile & Ohio RR, change its name to the Illinois Central Gulf RR and sell of many of its secondary lines. What remains of its lines between Chicago and New Orleans are owned by Canadian National today.

I found a tired and faded IC 8271 at Tuscaloosa, AL in April 1984. [Nikon N2020, Kodachrome]

At the top it reads GRIT HEART DRIVE and below it reads Moving The Weight Of The World. It was painted by the NS shop in Altoona, PA.

He was moving at a pretty good clip (chose 1/640), so a side shot was difficult. Maybe someday I can catch it at rest with a roster shot.

There was a fan nearby who'd also set up for a shot of the special locomotive and he had a Nikon D90. With his D90 and my D5100, two old DX Nikons were on station, still cranking out images.
