From October 1977 in Knoxville, TN, an L&N C-420 awaits departure from the L&N's station for a short journey to Neyland Stadium to watch the U. of Tennessee Volunteers compete on the gridiron. On football Saturdays, the L&N operated a one car hospitality train for shippers and other friends of the railroad.

The station remains, but the yard and real estate succumbed to needs of the 1982 International Energy Exposition.

Here's another one from my Plus-X days with the Nikkormat, taken at Newark, NJ, probably in the summer of '76 as a big G rolls in. The GG-1s were magnificent machines.

I think this one was from a year earlier in the summer of '75, probably with my Dad's old Kodak Retina Reflex 35mm. It was a durable camera, made in West Germany I think, with interchangeable lenses and a no-battery light meter. We're on the platform at Chicago's Union Station as an E glides past.

From September 1975, a C&NW "scoot" bangs over the EJ&E at Barrington, IL northwest of Chicago. The EJ&E-owned tower was razed in 2006.

Late Train jpg.jpg

Yep another late in the afternoon iron ore train around 6pm, should have got a bit closer as it was still 35c outside with a lot of heat haze which made the photo a bit on the soft side.

Cheers

I can no longer recall exactly where I took this, but I think it was Far Hills, NJ. In any case, it's the summer of '76 and we're on the former Lackawanna Gladstone Branch headed to Hoboken and those are Lackawanna mu cars dating from 1930 which ran by the hundreds at the time. Upon installation of a modernized power system, they were retired in August 1984.

Nice picture Sandpatch, if it wasn't for that pickup this would look like a picture from the 30's. It's a shame Kodak didn't include EXIF & GPS data on their negatives. :p

In the early 1980s NJ Transit operated a special train on the DL&W to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the line's suburban electrification. Friends and I rode and had a fine day. To advertise the new technology, the DL&W used their fictional and iconic rider Phoebe Snow and wrote:

"Hello, Hello"
Says Phoebe Snow
"We welcome you
To our new show.
Steam steps aside
And now you ride
Upon a road Electrified." :D

Chris you've inspired me to add a station picture. This station built in 1907 served as the B&O passenger station in Fostoria Ohio. It no longer functions as a station, but is used as an office for the MOW department.
