Post your Train shots!

Went out yesterday to again try for some photos of trains on the two Congaree River bridges in Columbia, SC. After getting covered in gooey mud earlier in the week on the Columbia side of the river, I reverted to the other side in Cayce, SC. The shots required some wait time, but it's a beautiful area and time passed quickly.

First is CSX Q211 in from Louisville and the other two are NS 191 outbound for Macon, GA. I started to lose my light with NS's arrival, but I was happy with the images nonetheless.

Thank you! Both spots on each riverside take quite a bit of time to get to. I was very fortunate to get the CSX freight, as with all of CSX's operational changes, only one merchandise freight survives on this line and its arrival can happen anytime from 6AM to 6PM. Other trains use the line, but they're locals and yard transfer jobs with less visual interest.

As autumn approaches, the sun will move to improve the overall lighting and I'll probably try again then.

As I waited, I was amazed at the number of young people who used NS's bridge as a shortcut across the river. This bridge is probably 50 FT above the river, about two football fields long and there are few, if any, emergency places to stand on. More people came along later and were casually strolling the bridge as NS 191 was nearing. I yelled to them that they were in danger. Some hot-footed to the other end, but others didn't care. They must have made it to safety just in time. I had good sun here, but it later turned dark as thunderstorms moved in.

Caught NS's Erie Heritage Unit this afternoon on Train 192. I'm on the Columbia (SC) side of the Congaree River here. Typical overcast summer afternoon light. After the shot, I was somehow able to hike out, jump in my pickup, get stopped by the train at a crossing and drive to the yard in time to catch a roster shot of its arrival. I'd seen the Erie before, but never leading a train.

Nice shots! Much nicer paint than that NS black and white!

Thank you! I changed my metering to Center Weighted so that the sky wouldn't overwhelm the light reading, but I probably should have chosen Spot instead.

I was pleased to find that the river level had fallen five feet or so. That assured I wouldn't have another adventure in the mud like last time.

Made a stop while driving through Marion OH last Thursday. Caught the CSX local returning to the yard & a Northbound NS merchandise freight heading through town.

Checked out South Carolina's little Lancaster & Chester shortline yesterday and found a booming line, with trains everywhere. It was once owned by a textile firm, but was sold to some very smart railroaders who have expanded its miles and its carloads. The line is all jointed rail in need of resurfacing, so speeds are slow and trains are easy to follow. Several portions of the route are in woodland with no nearby highways, so trains can "disappear" for a while.

Sandpatch, if I squint a little I see Conrail locomotives. Love the tunnel motor, I'm glad they survive.

Tramp, I love this shot. What a neat shot of that steamer & on a turntable no less. I bet if you did a B&W conversion it would be hard to date the picture.

Great photos everybody! :encouragement:

The L&C also has a historic general office and a neat HO model railroad upstairs that closely replicates the entire railroad.

I want to return again for some scenic photos of L&C trains twisting their way through the pines.

Frustratingly, I can't find much about L&C passenger service or the station. I dig the weather vane too!

Maybe this guy can help point you in the right direction SP.

Also spotted om the L&C is the 9548, a former Canadian National widecab awaiting repainting. The front door is open to provide a bit of air circulation for the crew on a hot day.

Since this is Independence Day in the U.S.A., I thought I'd post a picture of an N Scale Bicentennial caboose I bought in 1976 when my country was 200 years old and I was young. I thought it was pretty neat when I got it and am still happy to have it, original bulky couplers and all. This model is about 2-1/2 Inches long.
