Thanks for the links Chris. Glad they managed to save & preserve that fine old station. Pennsy Girls FTW!

Yes, that's some fine work for certain and they left it looking as it should. As photographers, we're all saddened when we see depot preservationists select unfortunate colors, plant oversized shrubbery everywhere and erect ugly fencing. These gals did it right.

From June 1975 in Skokie, IL we find the Skokie Swift, as operated by the Chicago Transit Authority. This car was part of a series built in 1959-1960. A number of these durable cars are preserved today at the Illinois Railway Museum and other locations. These were the only cars on the CTA equipped with pantographs to access overhead wire, as this line was formerly operated by the Chicago, North Shore & Milwaukee which shut down in 1963. [Nikkormat FTn, Plus-X]

Nice composition Chuck and led by a very low numbered unit. Hard to believe that these locomotives are nearly 25 years old.

Thank you Sandpatch. I'm always excited to see a low numbered locomotive. Funny how I see these & think they are modern units. 25 years old isn't very new, I'd not have guessed that.

20+ years ago my wife and I were at NS Tower at Lima, OH and a CSX freight moved past with a dozen or so brand new wide cabs fresh out of GE Erie. The smell of fresh paint filled the air and it was a fun thing to see pass by.

What a great memory to have. :encouragement:

Another b&w shot from the Nikkormat FTn about 1975, this one from Deval interlocking at Des Plaines, IL where a C&NW freight makes its way north from Chicago toward Milwaukee. The train is crossing over the C&NW's triple track Harvard Subdivision, busy with commuter trains.

Guess which youthful photographer failed to record on film the C&NW's semaphore signals that guarded the crossing?

Great picture from the way-back machine Sandpatch. You are forgiven for thinking those semaphore signals would stand forever. Who knew such a thing as PTC would kill them off in the future? Or that C&NW would die off either.

Nor do we know what will be gone tomorrow.

Well put Chuck and Needa - we look down for a minute and change erases what we thought would always be there.

I guess I should be thankful that I have anything on film from my early days as a kid railfan.

When I was young, Es and Fs were eternal fixtures on C&NW commuter trains. This F was captured at Mt. Prospect, IL on June 23, 1975. These photos are all scanned from old prints. I was crazy about locomotives when I was young, so I tightly cropped the prints. I'm hoping that the negatives show a bit wider view of things.

Reconnected with a childhood friend earlier this month (we last chased trains together in 1984) to see what CSX and NS had to offer at Marion, Ohio. This was the scene, capping 12 hours of railfanning a great location: a pair of NS trains (the last two of 37 trains we saw) perform a rolling meet just north of West Center Street.

Blackhat, it looks like you were standing on the tower for your meet picture. Well done. Marion is a great place to catch some action on the CSX & NS.

Sandpatch, man these old pictures really have got me going. Your scans are great, your subject matter even greater! :encouragement:

From the City of Toronto Archives collection, I found this somewhat old photo of the John Street roundhouse. It's almost as if the CP and Nikon are inviting fans to stop by. ;)
