I'm just getting back into photography after a 12 year break. So everything in my signature line is brand new in the last 6 weeks, except the AF 28-105D. We've had very bad smokey air for the last 4 weeks in the Seattle area from forest fires here in Washington State as well as smoke coming down from British Columbia's fires. So I haven't had a chance to get out with the new gear and take any photos. I started photography in 1974 with a Vivitar 35mm SLR. Today's gear is light years ahead of the film gear that I used for over 20 years. Along with the gear in my sig line, I've bought a couple of new tripods, camera cases, all the do dads that come with photography. Been having a blast with it all.

My wife had Parkinson's Disease for 28 years. But 15 years ago it got really bad really fast. So for 10 years I was her 24/7 caregiver. I took care of her and worked a full time job. Had an apartment attached to the office I worked in. She passed away 5 years ago so now my time is mine again. I also do amateur astronomy and target shooting, hence my name "gunfighter48". I'm glad to be getting back into photography. Now I just need a chance to get out and take some pictures!! The fire smoke has cleared out in the last few days so hopefully I'll get out during the week and take some shots!

Hope you get enjoyment from you back to photography,i sold up a lot of years ago to care for my late wife so i know what your saying.

We had 44 years together which is more than a lot of people get. She got out before it really got nasty. The doctors were telling me what was coming up down the road and it was horrific. I'm glad she didn't have to suffer thru it. She's in a much better place now! I'm sorry for the loss of your wife. It's tough on the survivors but time heals a lot.

Me too, but I nearly destroyed a trigger AND a flash ('cuz I are smart like that) before giving up all hope. The "shoe" is about three sizes too small, making insertion nearly impossible A different solution is on the way.

Looking forward to hearing about the new solution and your experiences with it. I'd like to be able to leverage a tripod as well ... less to pack and carry. :)

Clearly I'm making things difficult on myself by wanting to attach the flash to the ball-head instead of simply removing the ball-head and using the existing 1/4" threads.

But now? Oh it is so ON... I *will* make this happen, as envisioned, or know the reason why.

And here's my Ultimate Solution. Turns out I was overthinking this whole thing and the problem solver was this $7 cold shoe from Amazon. All I had to do was remove the bottom mounting screw from a QD plate and attach the cold shoe to the QD plate using the included short screw from the top. It was just that stupid simple...

Step 1. Attach Cold Shoe to QD Plate Using Supplied Screw and Wrench:

Neat. I like having dedicated set-up solutions.

Well, thought I'd take a punt, bought a Snanny SN600SN from Amazon for £65, thought I'd give it a try.... So far CLS works well as does TTL, appears to expose correctly and the quoted GN of 60 even looks accurate. Build quality is better than I would expect for the money. Only draw back I can see so far is that the external battery pack input is Canon fitting. Really pleased for the money!!!

I bought a Neewer for a similar price and looks very similar too, it seemed to be a good flash, worked well, in fact still does. But a word of caution, the locking pin wedged down on top of my D700 and no matter what I did with the locking wheel refused to unlock. After a lot of searching on the web and fiddling about I discovered that at the front of the flash just above the locking ring, hidden in the threads, was a little silver lever that I managed to lift with a jewellers screw driver undoing the pin. The flash still works perfectly but with the aid of a pair of side cutters the lock pin is no longer there. I post this in the hope that you will never need the information and that your new flash provides a long and useful function :)

A vintage metal and glass cabinet fit the bill as a fine way to display my vintage (and a few antique) cameras. There are fourteen in the display case.

I did a good thing: I sold my D7000 (even if I really wanted to hang on to it).

Why?
This year I have bought:
Nikon 300mm f4 PF => lightweigh
Nikon D500 + Lexar 2933 XQDs => for AF and fps
Nikon 20mm f1.8, 28mm f1.8=> to have Nikon glass under 50mm and improve Image Quality in that range
Sigma 17-70 f2.8-4.5 and 150mm f2.8 Macro => walk around DX lens and complement to my prime series
Tokina 10-17 f3.5-4.5 => to have a fisheye

It has been a bad NAS year.

Mike, it just screws onto the end of the lens just like on a DSLR it fits a treat. I will post a couple of raw images for you when I can remember.

It's slow to focus (only had it on my D5100 today) I'll probably end up selling it

First pic with it

Getting the umbrella I've been wanting for some time now: the 43" LumoPro 3-in-1 convertible... It's white, it's sliver it's a shoot-through!!

Oh, and a LumoPro swivel mount/cold-shoe to go with it.
