Latest glass arrived Saturday - Tokina 11-26mm f2.8
While shopping a, a deal showed up on ebay: Adorama was selling NEW Canon & Nikon mount versions for $329.99 shipped!

Score :)

Wow, great deal. I have the Tokina 12-24 F4 and I love it. I imagine this would be pretty amazing. I think I paid upper $200's for the 12-24.

DHL reports that the part I need to fix my D810 should arrive on Thursday. So the camera should be back together and (hopefully) working perfectly Thursday evening.

Looking forward to it!

Can we have a thread made from start to finish of the repair?

My latest photography goal is to buckle down and really start learning how to use flash, both on and off-camera. To that end I've latched on to a Yongnuo YN-622C-TX E-TTL Wireless Flash Controller kit. So far I'm pretty impressed. Build quality is great, I was able to flash the BIOS (easy peasy) and got everything up and running on my D750 in a couple minutes; all without so much as having to glance at the manual (which I'll do later of course).

I'm in that stage where there's still something amazing about being able to put a flash in the corner of a room, then walk clear across that room to compose the shot and have the flash fire from thirty feet away, putting light EXACTLY where I need it... Dare I say doing that the first time "triggered" something? That "the bulb went on"? I guess I've always understood off-camera flash intellectually but to actually work with it, even for just a few minutes, totally drove it all home in a really BIG way. I wish I had done this so long ago...

I have a shoot in mind of a medieval costume on a girl and her holding a birdcage with smoke coming out of it so I purchased the cage and I also have the same kind of idea for "Little Red Riding Hood" so purchased a basket too !!

Quick update on the D810 repair process: Success! Well...mostly. Turns out that for reasons unknown to me, the connector that feeds signals to the back panel LCD display is damaged, and I don't believe I caused that. So I'll have to replace that connector. Which is NOT a job for the faint hearted, as replacing a surface mounted connector is specialized work.

Fortunately, I'm qualified to do it. And I found the exact match part, but I've got to get them as samples from the manufacturer as any other source of them has a minimum order quantity of 5000 pieces.

The camera takes photos just fine. You just can't review them.

One other issue: The actuator arm that senses (and moves) the lens aperture setting is supposed to be spring loaded. Although I've checked that mechanism and it appears to be undamaged, and the spring IS there, the spring seems VERY weak. It actually barely resumes its previous position and takes seconds to do it. Actually replacing that spring would be quite the challenge in and of itself, because it's at the very bottom of the mechanism, which also controls the mirror.

I can not explain why that spring is that weak. It isn't stretched out and I'm pretty sure no parts are missing or damaged. It IS connected to the appropriate parts. Everything is right but the tension.

I consider this lens a gift from my beloved. This is the 14-24mm Nikkor lens she was planning to help me get. It was paid for out of her pension check, so it is from my late wife Anice.:D

Photos from ebay.

Talent? Maybe, maybe not. You learn what you DECIDE to learn. I decide to learn...pretty much a chunk of EVERYTHING. Knowledge is not the ocean. Although unimaginably vast and deep, you will never drown if you jump in the deep end of the ocean of knowledge. So, without fear, I jump in. Inevitably I swallow some knowledge by doing so.

Just bought this combo and hope to test this weekend. I also have the pocket wizards for manual, but for the price you just can't beat these for ETL. Really like what I see so far.

Said to someone the other day i never considered my V2 as a fully usable system, mainly because Nikon stopped short on the lenses, then the new DL camera doesn't go long enough, any way i treated it to a birding lens today, the Sigma 50-500,so it now has a FOV = 135- 1350mm

I still find myself grabbing those first before going to the Phottix triggers.

D810 repair update: It's working but I'm getting aperture motor mechanism errors. Difficult to diagnose as the camera has to be thoroughly torn apart to get to it, so I can't see it in action. I can replace the aperture control unit for 200 bucks, which is probably worth it, but I want to try to fix the actual problem first.

Tomorrow I'll start up a topic on this in general.

In the pic is the stands for the Calumet heavy duty backdrop stand, unfortunately there is no cross bar but hey I can live with that !! the "Kit" retails at £160 the stands on their own are £60 a pop
A Manfrotto tripod with the older 055XPROB legs, the head needs replacing but the legs are around £115
2x Bowens 90cm umberellas worth £30 each
1x Calumet 90cm Umberella worth £29.99
