I wish I could figure out a way to get a 14-24mm, as my last high end purchase. I might be able to do it if I cheat a bit and things go right in other ways too. I might try it.:)

That's a good looking bow. I used to shoot Hoyt, but that was a long time ago. They have come a long way since I shot. That will keep the freezer full.

D750 shutter replacement: Roughly 100 bucks for the part, plus some time to do the work. What's going on there is that some people buy brand new cameras to take apart and sell for parts value, which is MORE than the price of the camera when all added up. You get a shutter that is for all intents and purposes brand new.

Its a crazy world, still it looks like you benefit from it.

I've separated the mirror box from the shutter frame on the D810. Now I truly see the extent of the damage. And, thankfully, it's only in the plastic mirror box housing and none of the delicate mechanisms are damaged.

Actually getting it apart was not a bad job at all. And to keep matters simple, every time I had to unscrew anything to remove a part, I put the screw back in its original hole so I don't get them mixed up. This greatly simplifies the question of "Where does this screw go?" which always crops up if you just take the screws out and put them in the small parts box.

Could you post pictures of your progress so we can see the insides of the D810 ?

I am with @wornish . This sounds really interesting. Looking at the original photos, the 810 looked like little more than a paper weight. seeing the "work in progress" as well as the finished product would be very cool if it is not to much trouble.

I'd like to see this too! If you'd like, I can move these posts to a new thread so we can follow along.

All things considered, the camera breaks down into fewer subassemblies than you might have guessed. But the most complex parts are in subassemblies that you can see here. The shutter and mirror system is pretty fearsome in its complexity. I suspect I will have to transfer these systems over to the new part, but they should come out as a modular unit. I hope!

Is this difficult? Not really. But it requires patience and observation and a gentle touch. Nothing comes apart with force. If there's resistance, look for a hidden screw or maybe some adhesive tape. Brute force is NEVER the answer to camera disassembly or assembly.

I'm hoping to get the replacement mirror box in maybe a week.

Interesting finding: The focusing screen at the top of the mirror box is just held in place with a wire clip. If yours is really dirty, it is easy to remove, but cleaning it is theoretically not possible. I think it is. I would use a jeweler's ultrasonic cleaner and some Dawn dishwashing soap, and gloves to handle the part. That should completely clean it and leave no residue.

An inexpensive gimbal to try before commiting to a more expensive, better one, and a Dolica tripod with a removable head since my other tripod has a ball that's not removable...

You SURE that ball head isn't removable? It got on there somehow! Twist harder and grunt louder. I bet it'll unscrew.

Trust me I tried... :) I took a closer look and it's got a hex screw that attaches it to the tripod itself. The Dolica wasn't overly expensive and I needed a second tripod anyway.... :p
