The MIT labs tried modeling the fluid dynamics of large starling flocks in flight, but it kept giving their super computer a headache.

May I ask the experts among the "bird-in-flight" crowd what Focus (AF-Area) mode you use?

i tend to stick with "single-point' for most of my shots but this is not always successful with birds in flight.

I use c mode when looking to capture flight; spot for tree shots and the like (not that mine are a great standard for quality either way).
