Normally this is a "delete instantly" shot and it is obvious why but since I have to learn GIMP, it's good for some cheap trickery.

Not nearly good enough but I have issues adjusting to GIMP and get things going. It takes time.

J-see, That amazes me-how much you can do with a free editor. I wanted Raw Therapee as soon as I heard your recommendation. Maybe after another 100 hrs playing with it, I will be able to do at least some of the things you are able to do!! I have no idea how you disposed of the feet that were present in the raw photo. I don't fully understand RT either but the basics are identical between most editors. The rest I just goof around until it does something worthwhile. But it's a fantastic editor.

It's been a while indeed.

SOOC (neutral):

IN RT load cam & lens profile; auto-levels and crop the part I want. Save as TiFF.

gull001.jpg

First adjustments; pull detail with tone mapping, adjust highlights and all, increase chrominance and some contrast. Some minor noise reduction. Save as new file.

First basic sharpening and some fine-tuning. Then save into the final format. Add some sharpening (trying to avoid the contrast fringe) and export as JPEG for here.

Set of for the lake this morning in bright sunshine, its only four miles away but it was thick mist and low cloud again, when this happens i normally still walk around it and take pictures to to practice shutter finger and eye coordination then dump the results, anyway was bored when i got home so had a play.
