Pinterest and Copyright

How can one disable right click and copy? This would seem to be advantageous for those not wanting their images used.

There are various DHTML and JavaScript methods for disabling right-click on a website.

<body oncontextmenu="return false;">

The above is the probably the quickest way, unless your website supports plugins (such as WordPress). That will disable any right-click within a page body. There are other, more complicated scripts available as well.

Lol, well, the people that know me, know that my main subject is aircraft. Ihave shared them with friends who are photogs, my family and a firsg officer who flies for air transat. Therefore, i don,t really need to post anything online - yet - to have people know about my pics. I guess if i want to start selling them; then, yes, i would start a website. I am also part of an aviation website where people know i take pics of planes and i am also getting involved with the plane spotting community. So, networking is sometimes better than posting online.

Every now and then we need a wake-up call on this copyright issue. We don't need to go nuts and stop posting everywhere. But we do need to apply pressure to places like Pinterest. Not posting is not the answer. Educating the public and standing up for your rights is.

For Jonh Q Public to be educated, he has to give a damn first. John Q, beyond having instant visual gratification, does not really give a damn about photographers rights.

Myself, I am not sure whether to be pissed or pleased about Pinterest. NONE of my images were pinned! And now, they won't be.

John Q Public would care if he were fined $$$$.
Photographers need to care about photographer rights first.

Hi Lscha. What would be the point of this? When you can right click and save any photo to any folder you like anyway. For example I can even save your avatar photo.

There are some photos, (like on Shutterstock) that when you right click on them, you don't have the option to copy or save.
Mine? LOL! I'm not worried. They are for everyone.

But there is obviously a way to do this and some people would post them for all to see if they knew they could not be copied.

I think Laura is suggesting that people NOT be allowed . . . .500px.com also has the right click disabled.

Right click disable doesn't do anything for people that want to save a photo, it just makes it a little harder to copy the location of the photo. Even when pictures are embedded in a flash interface or a background image, someone who knows what they're doing can look at the source and find the image.

On the other hand, not everyone knows what they're doing. :)

Your best bet is watermarking, and google image search (search by image) to see if anyone has copied it.
