Don't worry guys. Despite the guy in this forum thinking I'm a dickhead (and believe me I've been called a lot worse, I just don't expect it in a forum like this), or one other person whose rationale totally confuses me, it wouldn't deter me from returning. The few of you I did sort of get to know a little better made it all worthwhile - Billy Y, fotojack, KWJams, Eye-level, cnyram, pierro, (sorry if I missed loads)... in any case, keep up the friendly advice to other visitors and the forum will blossom! Don't let a bad apple spoil the barrel.
I know an X10 is a drastic climb-down from a D7K. It was a blessing in disguise really, having the focusing issue. It was a real problem, and the manager at the retailer was completely foxed by it too - it made no sense. Without getting into it again, it made me realise that cameras have surely come a long way since my days with a Minolta Dynax 8000i, and as I think Billy mentioned, I realised I didn't need anything like the D7K to produce what I was trying to achieve. I explained all this to the retail manager, and as I said, the problem gave me the opportunity to change my mind.
I wasn't going to rush straight into buying another DSLR without thinking long and hard about it first, but I didn't like the idea of walking out of the store empty handed either.
The reality is that I lost my job 1 year ago due to the global recession, and whilst I'm still getting by, there's just not the same cash flow. Like the example I used before about Rolls and the Yugo, at the minute I'd rather have an affordable camera at the minute, just to keep me going, and perhaps, if I find work again, then I can consider something else, which might well be a no-frills DSLR with a prime wide angle and maybe a portrait lens. But no, despite my experience, Nikon is still a possibility. And Nikonites is still a forum I would revisit.
I just want to give the whole thing more time and thought, and not get bogged down too much by others opinion - I want what's right for me. The X10 is a straight replacement for my 12 year old Sony DSC-H1 that is about to lie down, and no doubt will make an excellent snaps camera when I do decide to go for a DSLR in the future. The timing (and the finances) just aren't right at the moment, as I'm sure you'll now understand. I hope this clears up any confusion for the speculators.
And if it's okay, having considered my options, I'd like to stay on as a contributor to the forum, even thoung I'm not currently using a Nikon. I appreciate I'd not be able to enter competitions or whatever, but it would be nice to at least participate - if that's okay.
