A friend of mine had the sigma 2.8 but had to give up on it due to its immense size.
It looked like he had a waste-paper bin on the front of his camera!
I think he had some very good results with it though.
As far as I remember the lens had its own battery for the AF motor.

These people were 2 or 3 hundred yards away and it appears that their boat was disabled. I kept an eye on them to make sure they were OK. Eventually, they got the boat off the sand and putted away. I felt good about keeping their situation monitored in case they didn't have a cell phone. Yep. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. (500mm comes in handy)

I feel like these pics should have been placed in the Architecture section.........the lines are stunning! Of course, the moon shots were nice as well. Keep up the good work:) True samaritan!

On a more serious note, this lens, paired with the D800, is really great. All of these photos are heavily cropped. I am very happy I bought this lens.

On full frame bodies, do you guys find yourselves wanting/needing a teleconverter to get the extra reach?

We have an airshow over in Ft Worth this weekend. I'm on the fence about whether to take this lens along with the D7100, or just put it on the D810 and be done with it.

All guys want a longer one. (Not me, of course.)

I'd take the 810 for higher resolution and better cropping opportunities.

I would take the D810 in this case. The planes will be big enough to shoot without needing your D7100. The high ISO performance that you need shooting moving targets trumps the need for a TC or a crop sensor camera.

I also get to get on the ramp 2 hours before opening for images with the static displays, so I'll be taking the 16-35 as well for some up close and personal shots.

My 200-500 looks a bit better @ 500 on my 7200 than a crop on my 750. I'd take the 810.

So in your experience, taking the (albeit slight) IQ hit with adding a TC to get the FX closer to your 7200 would not be favorable? That's what it sounds like. I may take the TC just to get some samples, and will plan to do a good bit straight off the lens.

I have no experience with TCs. Maybe I should have one. I upgraded my D7000 to a D7200 shortly after I got the 200-500 as a way to extend reach and keep f/5.6.

I have a 1.4x TC and the 200-500 with a D750.
If I'm looking for the best quality I rather shoot FF and crop on the computer if needed.
Adding the 1.4x does 2 things you'll be at f/8 and AF slows some depending on the lighting.
Pictures are great from the combo but not something that's needed, I post process anyways so I'll crop if needed then.
By the way I'm using a Kenko 300 1.4 DGX I find it better than the Nikon 1.4x
