35mm on a DX is not the equivalent of 50mm on an FX.
My opinion is that it clearly and obviously is.
I think your argument may be: 28mm x 1.5 crop factor = 42mm equivalent. And yes, both might be closer to the diagonals, but the normal lens for FX is is NOT 43mm, it is 50 mm, always has been, for over 80 years. I would however think either one is "close enough" for the concept. It rules out special effects of wide angle and telephoto.
35mm x 1.5x crop factor = 52 mm. Maybe could argue for 50/1.5 = 33.3 mm, but 35 is what they make.
It is true that the assignment did not actually say "normal". Maybe that was not the idea. It said 50FX or 35DX, and it was pointed out that no substitutions are permitted.
This one probably is a good one to sit out. Previous ones, B&W Night, Birds, Flowers, seemed much more clear. Is an ostrich or penguin a bird?
