New Tamron 150-600mm f5-6.3

I just got mine earlier this week and had a little bit of time to play with it in our front yard and at a HS baseball game. All pictures are from a D800. NEF files exported from LR5 as JPEGs.

This one was at 600mm, ISO 100, 1/15 at f/6.3. SOOC no PP or cropping. Hand held, subject at about 10 feet.

This one was at 600mm, ISO 400, 1/1600 at f/6.3, SOOC cropped. Flag over the scoreboard beyond the centerfield fence. Monopod used.

This one was at 420mm, ISO 400, 1/800 at f/6.0. SOOC cropped and straightened. Monopod used.

Some PP would improve the color in these but I wanted to leave them as is for this post.

Sorry, meant to put these inline but they ended up as attachments instead.

Looks like Adorama is starting to get more in. I got an email from Adorama this morning that my lens has shipped. Woohoo! I ordered it in early January.

Popular Photography reviewed the lens here. Great conclusion: "The appeal of this lens for focal-reach-hungry photographers is obvious. Relative to others that reach 600mm, its handling could hardly be more user-friendly. And that price! (The Canon 600mm f/4L streets for nearly $13,000.) Performance outstrips the closest comparable tele-zooms."

While not a fast lens it is definitely worth the price. Sure I would like to have the Nikon 200-400mm f/4 or some of the high speed long telephoto primes but the cost of this lens is a whole lot easier to justify.

One thing you do have to consider when buying this lens is that if you want to use filters on it they are going to be pricey. This lens takes a 95mm filter.

I got tired of waiting for this lens to show up and bought an AF-S 300mm f/4 prime so I could at least get nice, sharp shots at 300mm range. As others have said, by the time this lens actually shows up in the States, maybe I will have saved enough $ to add it to my collection. :) (or I'll add a TC to the 300)

It's available in the US it's just that there is a high demand for it. I got mine from the local camera store here in Iowa. I had to wait a couple of weeks for it but it was worth it.

I just took a look at ebay and there were 14 Tamrons for Nikon listed. One good deal from Hong Kong for US $2878. While waiting for Adorama I started going through Tamrons Dealer list hoping for a stroke of luck. Half way through the list I found a dealer in a small mid-west town that had one in stock. UPS says Tuesday delivery. The battery is charged and the memory card is empty, I'm Ready

That's how you do it right there!

I have rung a few shops here and there are none in stock it seems. They want a 20% holding deposit on orders. One place I spoke to says they expect to get only 1 per month until the shortage is sorted, which should be about the end of the year. When I asked how many orders in front of me if I order I was told 5. I said I may as well keep the deposit in the bank and wait till the end of the year then. Don't get why they need a deposit when demand is reasonably high& supply small ATM. It's not like they won't sell them if you decide not to buy or get lucky and buy one elsewhere in the meantime.

I wanted to check with the dealer before I responded. I did not want them to be swamped if they did not have any. The dealer is Galloway Camera in Terre Haute, In www.GallowayCamera.com . At the moment they do not have any in stock but also do not have any open orders. They will take names and numbers and contact people as soon as they get one in. "Call now and be First on the list"< or you could go for the good Hong Kong deal at $2878.

I wondered why the world shortage so went looking. Apparently the early lenses had problems and most of them ended up being returned. So waiting is a good option.....gives time for Tamron to sort the problems :D

THIS WHAT B&H IS SAYING ABOUT 150/600MM ON THEIR FACEBOOK PAGE.
B&H Photo Video Pro Audio We are accepting orders however there is no time frame we could currently (accurately) quote on for fulfillment unfortunately. The lens is in extremely high demand world-wide and Tamron’s supply is not fulfilling that demand quickly enough. If you order it now it could likely take 3 or more months before you would receive it. - Yossi
