My Favourite D800 Images

Got an opportunity today to fiddle with my Daughter's Michael Kors watch again. I tried some images with the watch before I had my D800 (if memory serves me correctly). I thought I would revisit Michael Kors this evening.

My goal was to see the quality of the lowest ISO I could push on the D800. I am pretty happy with the results.
Nikon D800
Nikon Nikkor 105mm f2.8 VR
f18
8s
Tripod
LumaHawk 98 LED
Some Incandescent Room Light
Wescott Diffuser

and 1 Michael Kors Ladies Watch with Copper Finish.

It is also stunning in B&W! Processed in NIK Silver FX:

Very nice shots!

I'm not trying to be contentious but the small images posted in this thread don't really show off the D800 to me. I'm not criticising the composition or artistic merit it's just that they could have been taken with an iPhone as far as detail goes.

I have a D800 myself so I can imagine that the originals are fantastic but I struggle to see it at this size.

Geoffc,

They are breathtaking to see at the full 40mb! However, you can't upload them at that size so, this is as good as it gets.

Art, I have no doubt about the quality of the originals and images like the first one at sunset would be challenging to say the least without the dynamic range of the D800. I would also agree that the 16-35 is a fantastic lens. I sometimes use mine on my D300s as well and it's silly sharp, I assume because it only uses the centre of the lens.

I've had my D800 for a while and it was only on my recent holiday that I really started to love it. One reason is that I let the auto ISO run up to 6400 in low light situations and got some very acceptable results.

For example I took this set handheld with my 24-120F4. They are not all at 6400 but I just let the camera keep the shutter speed where it needed to be via ISO.

What lovely set of great pictures,is the exposure as per camera for the interior or have you adjusted for different areas of light.

I also would like to say that I really enjoyed the pictures and think you did a very fine job with these!!

Thanks for the wonderful feedback on the cathedral pictures. To answer a question, the pictures have been slightly adjusted in Lightroom as i shoot raw but what you see is pretty much how they came off the camera. The light was so good that day streaming through the windows.

I went in the cathedral with my wife and she had her D300. After about half an hour of me shooting at up to iso6400 with impunity I felt a bit guilty. We had been looking at a D7100 for her in the camera shop opposite before going in so I suggested that she go and buy it then come back in to compare. It was on the cards to buy one so it wasn't completely impulsive. She is very happy with her purchase!! We both love our 300s but they struggle in low light or such wide dynamic range.

I didn't mean to hijack Art's thread with this and I just want to re-state that I was not criticising the original images, I was probably just frustrated that I couldn't appreciate them in their full glory because of the small upload size.

I have been trying my hand on some portrait work. I took full advantage this weekend of a beautiful setting sun on the Lake to shoot some portraits.

Nikon D800
Nikon 105mm f2.8G VR
ISO 200
Some unbelievable evening light!

This one is my favourite, although I pretty much like them all!

Did a little PP work in Colour FX to get the glow.

ISO 6400

No typo.... 6400

I had no light, these are taken at dusk. Heavy clouds, and I make my first good find in a few weeks! In fact, this is my first good sighting of a Green Heron. Just my luck. Now that I know where he feeds, I will return.

Shutter: 1/250

Thanks Kevin, (and Jeff and Marcel). Greatly appreciate the feedback.

I post here to try and show off the extreme quality of the Nikon D800. It is really difficult to appreciate the quality of the images posted due to the resolutions I post in to keep the files small. I don't know if this will show well, by have a look at this image.

Taken at ISO 50! I posted a similar, better image of this before. This is one of my out takes. Have a look.....

This is a large file... hopefully, it gives you a small idea what I see. This is a fraction of the quality of a full 40mb file on my RETINA display!

Enjoy

Even with the small file, I can see the quality of the image. Great shot of a really nice watch by the way.

You should ask Nikon for a seller's fee for all the D800 that your images will sell… Your images are like the ice cream truck that used to come around when I was a kid. I want one, I want one :)

Thank you, Marcel, for the very kind words!

Ah, if only I could get Nikon's attention .... ;)

With any luck, next week, I will be posting Hawk images, if the weather holds. Taking a trip with a couple of buddies to see if we can get some images during the great Hawk migration currently happening here in Ontario. If the weather and wind co-operate, I will be posting a few images.

Morning out at the park. Unfortunately, the sun was co-operating this morning, when nature was fully out in its glory.

The Great Blue Heron has long been on of may favourite birds. I great enjoy watching it hunt and especially photographing it.

Today was no exception!

This was shot at ISO 2000 and this is just one picture of a large series. It was a pleasure to see this particular feeding today.

Hope you enjoy the image!

I have a larger image you can see on www.500px.com/Art_L if you prefer to view a larger sized image.

This shot is one of my favourites of the summer already!
