What is your approach to get the piano owners to sit for a photo. So many people just don't want to have their picture taken. And they always look done up and ready.

I order them and won't take no for an answer. Except for one person that just wouldn't give up. But seriously, I just tell them that it is for a book that I want to do about piano persons with their instrument. I mention that I don't know if it will ever be published, but at least it will be for my children to see the people that made me work.

About being done up and ready, I only tell them at the last minute, just before they pay me. I tell them there is only the picture left to be done before they pay me. By the time they say what, I have the camera in hands and just tell them to " sit there, or stand over there" and then just click away. I rarely take more than 3 or 4 shots and it doesn't take long. It's not a photo session, but more like a candid shot. So, I guess since I don't make a big fuss with it and make it look just casual like if I was taking a souvenir shot, they agree. But some of them start worrying when they have to face the 24-70 2.8... :)

Very cool shot, and quite amazing DOF considering the EXIF showing aperture of 2.2. Those seats in the background are pretty durn sharp, but still a nice blur in the front. OOC, or edits?

No edits except for the color and shadow fill-in. Don't forget that I was using my little Fuji X-10 with a focal length of 7.1mm. It does add quite a bit of Depth of Field. I had pre-focused the shot from where you see me in this picture and then turned the auto focus to manual so it wouldn't re-focus.

Oh, and I forgot to add that some of these people have been regular customers for over 30 years, so they kind of know me. It does help I think.

March 28th. Well, it's still snowing and I'm left with my piano person of the day. So, while I was working alone in the hall at the local University, I thought I'd do something special. The piano person of today is no other than myself. Yup, a selfie done with the self-timer and the Fuji. Can't wait for all that snow to melt...

Very cool idea and I love the outcome :)

March 30th.

When it is enough, it keeps coming. Seems winter won't give us a break up here in the North East. Another dump of (as even my Mom says) white sh.t.

So I opened the bathroom window to get these before even getting dressed. Not sure I want to go out today... :)

I feel for you Marcel... we have had similar but ours "appears" to have broken and the rain the last 3 days has washed a lot of snow away... Nice pictures but I know how tired of it you must be,,,

March 30th. I felt like doing some experiment with hand held long exposures. Not so easy, but I was surprised as I got this one I find interesting.
Fully backlit, the cat was in between two windows and the incoming light created some interesting effects.

Another 3 seconds hand held exposure. I'm trying to imitate the feel of old photographs that were made when the cameras had slow shutter speed and slow film.

March 31st. Still working with this idea of slow shutter speed for my piano person's project. Got a little carried away with a 1 second trial hand held...

A bit too slow but I got it up to 1/10 s. and got better. It's weird when you're so used to sharpening and pixel peeping, but the end result is very nice and soft. So I'll work a little more in this direction for some portraits.

I forgot to say I did these with the Fuji X10... The result would probably have been different with the D600 or 700 considering the mirror vibrations.

April 2nd. Piano person of the day.
Boy, I was so used to the D600 with the quiet mode that I forgot that with the D700 1/30 with a 70mm lens is below safety for motion blur. So, I had to blur it a bit more to make it acceptable.

Also tried a B&W version and I'm still in between these twos. For this version, I tried the shake removal filter of Ps CC.

Another blurred shot due to too slow shutter speed. This time I resorted to a brush filter with Ps CC to fade the shutter blur.
Fuji X10 but the person moved, not the camera.

Your Fuji X10 gets a lot of positive reviews and judging the quality of your photos, I can see why. I've contemplated owning a small pocketable camera but haven't quite worked out how to explain the purchase to the boss yet. I'm thinking she'll not be very understanding...

The more I use it, the more I'm certain that it will NOT replace my D600. It's nice to have, but what I don't like is the lack of info in the viewfinder. For me, taking pictures in "live view" is not very good. I find the "live view" is not as live as in a DSLR. There seems to be time lag and I've missed a few shots just because of this.
And above 400 iso, it gets a bit noisy.

But it's light, does not intimidate persons in front of it.

Thanks for your view.

.

That's the key right there. When you read about the great old school photographers, they claim having the camera down at waist level (looking down through the viewfinder that's placed at the top of the camera) allowed them to interact with their subjects eye to eye. It had a real calming affect and allowed the photographer to capture some them being very natural and not guarded like people get when a camera is in their face. It would be nice if they made some kind of easy viewfinder screen that would allow you to do something similar.

One more that I will sneak in my today's pics. Food I shouldn't have had for lunch. Same tiny cam than this morning's piano person.
