Lawrence's 365 for 2014

Not exactly a competition entry today.
I tried something I haven't really tried before but all I confirmed is you need a wide angle lens with a wide aperture to get the results I was looking for.
The hardest part of this was trying too see if I had anything in frame! Had to bend over beyond doubly to look through the viewfinder.
Here is the result of my first attempt at the Milkyway.
I tried my 18-55 at 18mm but the maximum f is 3.5 and it didn't really work.
The 35mm at f1.8 was better imo.

I had a lot of fun today but must make a note that when I have fun the price is a lot of processing.
Rally New Zealand was taking place around the conner and I went to practice a whole lot of things such as settings, panning, blah, blah blah.
I was very happy with the performance of my camera and my lenses - VERY HAPPY INDEED.
I took a long walk to be away from the maddening crowd (about 80 other hobbyist photographers, tv crew and I figure a few that are pros.
I landed up on my own on a fairly mundane corner but still had about 4 or 5 cars lose control as they came into the corner.
had to dodge pebbles and rocks and was so worried about one hitting the camera I missed the one that hit my ankle.
So here are a few from the outing.

First one of the cars that very nearly lost it - not too sharp in terms of focus but hoping to show how he loses it almost immediately.
All that was between me and the cars was the sturdy yellow tape you can see in the images.

So far my favourite of the day is this one but I have a lot to process.

Another one which I think is very sharp

These two were the closest to each other of any of the racers I saw today.

I love the shot of the yellow Subaru. You may be able to sell that one to the sponsors!

The first set with the red car, you are understandably a bit far away - maybe better to go on the inside of the corners? :p

Yes I like that yellow one too. Never thought of selling it to the sponsor. Great idea. I wonder what the going price of something like this would be.

I was a lot closer at one stage. Right up against the yellow tape on the left hand side. I moved back to try some panning.

I don't know, maybe ask one of the Pros on here? I know if that was my business name on that car, I'd love to have the photo! The team would probably like it too! The usual 10% in a paper bag behind the bike shed. ;)

As a marshal, I'd have ticked you off for being on the outside of a corner, you'd be directly in the run-off area. If you must, go slightly up the track & position yourself just before the corner. Inside of corners is always safest. I see pros at the races that will use several remote wireless cameras for the more dangerous positions.

LOL Marshal … what marshal? No-one within miles of me.

I am thrilled with today's find.
A candid street shot of a Labrador patiently waiting outside a pub for his/her master.
The expression just says "intelligence" to me.

Awesome work lately my friend. The sunset and the Milky Way shots are beautiful. I also really like the rally action shots, wish we had that kind of racing out here to shoot!

I am feeling very pleased with myself today having finally got a decent shot of a pheasant.
I have been trying for months and finally this morning the opportunity presented itself. It still required a bit of stealth though.

I am still in experimental/learning mode so something a bit different today.
It was a cold day with the fire on. These are my two charges sitting very comfortably next to the fire.
I killed the colour of the dogs with a "grunge" look and highlighted the blue on the side of the fireplace (would have been good to get the red glow of the fire but I didn't) and warmed up the floor.
The effect is ugly but as I said I am experimenting.
They look miserable but in reality they aren't. :)

The grunge effect is cool in the right shots. I like where this shot is headed. I like to find dingy alleyways and get shots of whatever is back there. In post, I'll punch up the clarity and contrast to make it look really "raw".

Experimentation is always a good thing in photography. :)

Today I hung my camera upside down on and under my tripod to get a worms eye view of my subject. The D5100 screen was pretty handy thank-you!
And then some more time finding out what Perfect effects 8 has to offer. I am enjoying using it. One day I will try and do what Jake does and analyse and then try to manually do what the presets offer.

Woah! Lawrence! Those shots are AWESOME!
I totally dig the perspective and how you have to stop and look another time to figure out what size those chairs are. (At least I had to ;) )

Glad you like them Jonas. I was sitting here and noticed how the chair looked almost as if it was suspended with the edge of the pool just ending in a big drop off. I thought is there anyway I can capture that and this is what I came up with.

Considering I had no idea what to shoot today I am very pleased with them. Hard to say which I like best.
