Lawrence's 365 for 2014

An interesting experience.
I inadvertently landed up with 4 shots of the same subject with different settings. Used a tripod so effectively had the potential to create an HDR of an interesting old burnt out house.
Didn't look too bad while doing it but on opening it I think it is overdone. Plain horrible actually.
So you get to see something more soothing.
I have always enjoyed new growth in fields in the late afternoon sun.

Excellent composition. I think you may have the eye. Of course we will need to see several hundred more posts to be anywhere near sure.

Funny you say that @RON - just this morning I was thinking of starting a thread along the lines of an "eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth" except I was wondering how I could arrange a "Tooth for an eye" - my tooth for someones good photography eye.

And do I post under "gear wanted" or "learning photography"?

I got a late afternoon phone call from flatmate to say she had tickets to Bill Bailey (comedian) and that we were going. As I hadn't taken a photo at this point I decided to shoot the first thing I saw and be done with it.
Here it is but I did a bit of selecting, cutting, pasting, background fill etc. All things I couldn't do a year ago.
The show was hilarious!

I like how some people ( I don't like you Lawrence :D ) can take the ordinary and make it look like something :D

Bill Bailey is a scream :D I can imagine the show would have been VERY good

A tad disappointed in today's photos.
The highlight was an older couple that had a three legged dog.

Out at the golden hour. I wasn't sure if this was more effective in capturing the light in colour or mono. In the end I went for mono.

Cats and dogs is what is falling outside so I tried a very long exposure (over 3 minutes) indoors using my 35mm f1.8
The photo still came out very dark as there were no lights on.
The subject, a once stunning rose, is on its way out and probably should have been binned by now.
However it is now recorded for all eternity or as long as pixels last in digital format!

No flash used. It was late afternoon and camera was aimed at dark foliage in background.

Ah...so not backlit!! I think late afternoon is hard to do sometimes, and you can't always get in a position to backlight flowers but they would have looked much better if you had been able to maybe (although I think you said it was crap weather there today? so you wouldn't have that option?)

I had no idea when I woke up this morning that this would be another low mojo day. I guess when you are 5 weeks out from the longest day of the year your psyche anticipates a bit of sun. So when you get 15 degrees as your high with gusting winds and horizontal rain the spirit tends to get down!
"Now pull yourself towards yourself, lad, as you go out and try to shoot something different. Here's an idea - think monochrome.
Oh look at the detail in the wooden fence separating us from the neighbour's house.

My brand new 2nd hand SP-Af Tamron 90mm F2.8 Di macro 1:1 arrived today.
First impression: nice, solidly built and compact.
Second impressions: wow, fast and sharp man - so sharp I thought I was going to cut myself!
This is the first shot I took with it and it is SOOC!

And for some reason known only to me I really really like this one ...
Check that DoF

Tamron's amazing depth of fied.jpg

And considering my main reason for buying this lens was for portraits I couldn't wait for my flatmate to get home and snap her.
This was taken with her sitting on the couch after dinner.
"Don't!" she protested but I hadn't told her how fast this lens is and that her demand was way too late.

So all in all a very pleasing purchase and you can expect a few macros from me over the next few days.

Third impression: This could easily become my new favourite lens.

Nice!! I'm sure you'll love it Lawrence. If these first efforts are anything to go by we'll be expecting some spectacular macro shots tomorrow :D

I haven't shot any birds for a while and these two are nesting somewhere close by. In the meanwhile they are being very co-operative with posing on the fence.
Shot through the lounge window.
