Still in practice mode. And probably will be for a while I guess.

I am content with the above picture but not "happy"
I need to find out what the experts are doing to get the eyes of their insects in such detail. This was SOOC and as close as I could get.
Practice, practice, practice ...

Wow, awesome lens! The images looks really great!
I think the experts use extensions, my 105 macro only goes a tad closer than your lens. Maybe some also crop but I always crop as little as possible, as you never know if you are gonna print out in large some day.

Hey mate search for my macro tips and others, we have gone over how to's quit a bit and I am sure you will find your way. If all else fails I will do a one on one while you are here in Oz next year ;)

Thanks Jonas.
I am going to practice with it all day today - just as soon as i have roasted another batch of coffee beans.
Already now your macros look really good, especially considering how short time you've had the lens. I'm sure you'll become great with it really fast.
I myself bought the 85mm Micro Nikkor a short while back, and that too is just crazy sharp. Much much sharper than I can get my 35 f/1.8, even. So I'm sure you'll find many applications for your macro :)

Do you roast your own beans? Sounds nice. How do you do it? Just on a pan or by some fancier means?

Lawrence you'll probs find it's all about DOF. I know a lot of the "experts" do focus stacking on their macro shots. Dunno that I would be that dedicated. I know that with such a narrow DOF you have to be pretty choosy about your focal point....focusing on the eyes (or on one eye at least) helps get that detail in the eyes, but unless you have the subject on an even plane you will lose focus on some part of it. Almost impossible out in the field I find

Jonas I roast my coffee beans using an everyday popcorn maker. Really simple.

My flat mate has been complaining that her shots aren't as sharp as mine. So to test her lens I stuck it on my body and produced this.

I thought it was pretty good. She now blames her "settings" but after some querying it appears she has never set her diopter correctly!
She used my macro and is not happy with the results. Should I help her or should I act superior? :highly_amused:
When she has stopped spitting I will see what I can do.

So moving on to my real photos of the day it is also a potato bloom.

And prior to this I was trying to get a wasp to get his head out of a flower so i could take some shots.
I did get some nice ones but thought you may want to see what I was facing most of the time!

Went for a little walk and seems I have lost the knack! Took a bunch of photos which I thought were ok but they weren't.
In the end only one is worth showing but the good news is I finally took the macro lens off.

Street photography at its scariest!
This lady was standing 2 places in front of me in a queue. She suspected but wasn't certain that I took a photo of her. I acted as if I was shooting behind her.

I had an awesome day as an "assist shoot" at the annual variety concert for stardom.org This is an organisation that takes care of special needs people concentrating on what they can do rather than what they can't.
The "Jammers" were an incredible bunch of people that could not stop smiling and they had a ball.

I did too.

And this is a candid shot of one of the make-up artists that was there to help.
I am going to see what it looks like in monochrome too.

We found another escargot in the veggies. This time we asked him to model and he was very shy ...

As can be seen I am still not 100% certain of the DoF on this lens.
