I have always hoped that one of my two sons or grand kids would get interested in photography so I could pass on what little I have learned over the years but it doesn't look like that is going to happen. I was asked yesterday if I would consider taking on a student so he could possibly pick up some pointers by going with me and watching me shoot. I immediately said yes and was excited about the opportunity. We went out yesterday for the first time and I am not really sure if this will come up to my expectations or not. He always had his eyes wide open watching everything I did but to my surprise didn't ask any questions. Well I guess I will introduce you to my first student, his name is Henry. Only time will tell how this will all work out. LOL

I thought I would give you an update on my first student, Henry. We went out today and I let him try my D7000 with the Tamron 24-70 F2.8 lens on it and he went crazy taking pictures. He listens to me and watches everything I do and seems to be picking up photography very well. With his permission I will try and post some of his work in the next few days.

Here is Henry in action out at the Gulf Island National Seashore Park in Ocean Springs, Ms.

RIP :(
I have been shooting groups of 9th graders on field trips designed to build team building skills this week. I think you have a better chance with your student than you would with some of the students I have seen this week.

I really wish I could get a human student to try and share some of what I know about photography with. I instructed a lot of students when I had my karate classes for several years, hundreds of students that I had that learned archery from me and a bunch of people that learned how to train their dogs from me when I instructed dog obedience classes. I just enjoy teaching people things and would like to do it with photography also. I am hoping that Henry might tell a bunch of his friends and we can get a class together.

I went for an evening walk in our little downtown area along the creek walk. When I got out of my truck I saw a young lady shooting at a fountain. As I walked up she saw my camera and asked me if I know how the camera strap should be put on. She had just gotten a D7100 and the place she had bought it put the strap on and I am surprised the camera had not been smashed to the sidewalk yet. We went on a short photo walk together and I think I was able to help her in starting to shoot and understand her camera a little better. When I was in photofinishing and camera sales that is one thing we always tried to do was to educate people on photography. It was in our best interest. The more we helped them the better their photos were. The better their photos were the more they shot. The more they shot the more money I made. Win Win for everyone.

Don, I was a boy scout leader for many years and one thing that I made that really shows how important teamwork is was a pair of skis. I took two boards that were about six feet long and attached about five ropes to each board that they could slip their feet into. It was like a pair of skis but had foot holds for about five people. I made two sets of these and we would have five people on each set of skis and would have a race that the finish line was only about 10ft away. You could have four big people and one kid and if they all did not act as a team and move at the same time they would all fall like dominoes, even if all the adults moved together and the child didn't they would not go anywhere until that worked as a team. A race that only goes ten feet doesn't seem like much but if you try it you will think it is a very long way to go. It is a GREAT team builder and a heck of a lot of fun.

He is cute and I think he is the one who inspires you now to do shots wou actually will never do. High5 for Henry as well as grandpaw who is very creative.
