Re: All D600s can get free shutter service

I got this today too. But this is the 2nd notice for me. I think the first one came in February. My D600 has been worry free as well :)

Maybe it happened and you're email notification is late (like mine). Funny how they don't say oil. Pondering whether I should send my trouble-free 600 in for shutter maintenance at 10K clicks.

In the past they wanted a photo with spots uploaded so they can see it. If you haven't had any problems, consider yourself fortunate. Good luck with whatever you decide to do. :)

I got it too, and suspect it's just a follow-up to the original notice back in February. They don't say "oil" because the truth is that it's the shutter itself that's the problem - it just happens to spit a bit of oil along with flecks of coating from the shutter itself, which is how the "dust" gets in there.

With the D7100 sitting here I'm tempted to send my perfectly working, 20K+ click D600 in. I'm thinking the worst they could possibly do would be to break it and have to send me a D610, right? My only question is that once I contact them will they tell me "never mind" after they realize that they've had it twice already?

(wait 5 minutes)

Well, it seems that they aren't rejecting mine based on serial #, so it's off to Nikon again this afternoon. What the heck?! LOL

I'm guessing this go-round might be a little faster in terms of turnaround. Not that I'm want for the extra body at the moment. Keeping my fingers crossed that they look in their database, see this is return #3 and offer the replacement. Yeah, I know, but a guy can dream. Not that I'm in any way displeased with the way this has performed in the last 15 months since they had it last.

Thanks for the heads up. Didn't know this advisory was out. I'll be sending mine in after the summer holidays.

Re: All D600s can get free shutter service

This thing had created such chat and talk. I did have some dust while I was traveling in Vietnam 2 years ago with the new camera. Unfortunately, I hadn't brought my "Rocket blaster" nor my sensor cleaning kit with me. So, I had to do some digital cleaning of some of my images. But, after all that, seems my D600 is doing fine, so why take a chance of a technician doing something that could make it worse...

For those who really had recurrent problems, this is a fine solution, but for those who don't... Like the old saying: If it ain't broken, don't even try to fix it.

I personally don't believe Nikon would offer such an expensive replacement/service option if there was not a genuine issue. They would not offer it because of 'chat & talk' alone. I think you would be foolish not to have a free service & shutter replacement, even if you are not bothered by the dirt on the sensor. Mine is only an issue with small apertures but I'd much prefer a Nikon tech service it than me just giving it a manual sensor clean.

My D600 is 18 months old, the option to get a new shutter mechanism and a service for free is a no brainer in my opinion. I think it would be stupid not to.

I fully understand your point of view and do agree that it would be foolish not to have it done. But, since the option of having it done even after the warranty is expired, I feel I have nothing to loose by just using it until it gets to be problematic. For now, it's not.

Just to be clear, the option for "having it done even after the warranty" has not expired. It is because my warranty has expired, but Nikon is offering to perform this service for free anyway, that I'm taking advantage of it. Granted, as you've pointed out, any time a tech sticks his nose inside he can cause as many problems as he fixes, but I'm willing to take that risk, particularly given that this would be strike 3 with this camera and I would be justified in them sending me a D610 to replace it. I suspect most owners are in your shoes, Marcel, with a D600 that has performed well since day one.

Thanks. I've mastered the wet cleaning "art" but getting a new shutter is a good thought. I just need a backup camera.

I sent my D600 in back in March for the 'oil spots.' After a shoot in San Diego this weekend, the spots have returned and it's NOT dust. I contacted Nikon upon this and after talking with them this morning, I am getting a BRAND NEW, D610, as a replacement. The camera is on its way to Nikon and I was told to keep all the accessories that came with the camera. They only want the body back. I am happy that Nikon has resolved the issue for me.

Ok, found it! I've decided to send mine off tomorrow, now that I have the V2 as a backup. I've got a few spots that are stubborn and feel my wet cleaning is above average, more than one would expect with only 10k actuations. Have you folks insured it or do you think tracking is enough?

I would insure if it was me, shipping insurance is cheap and gives you the protection of loss or damage.

I would definitely insure it, too, even though it won't be travelling far from you (Melville, NY I think).

I've decided I will insure, although it is already insured with the rider on my homeowners policy which covers any loss. Between the 2 I could end up with a D810 :).
