Last night I attended a local photography club (for the first time) and they have, what I think is, quite a neat system.

Through monthly competitions members photos are rated which in turn gets the member a rating. Currently these are C (everyone starts at C regardless of ability until graded), B and A.
I won't go into detail here but happy to discuss with moderators and members if you think this is a good idea.

Where I think it would be good for Nikonites is to have that grading alongside member's avatar so at a glance we can tell who is an average, really good or great photographer.

Just a thought and I do realise the grading and judging takes time and effort.

Grading is a very subjective issue. We've had issues when people get critiqued on an individual image - imagine what would happen with an entire portfolio?!?

I had an idea. I like the concept of a donation and people picking how much they want to give back, but I don't like the idea of tiers. How about 3 different donation/subscription amounts that are able to be chosen, but they all do the same thing and give you 'contributing member' status ?

2000+ active members only means that many have been on site in a certain amount of time. They are continued to be counted as active members until they have been off site for a set amount of time without logging in. I believe this is months we are talking about not being on site at all.
So the truly active members are much less. Just a FYI.

43 votes in the poll. 2000+ active members. That not much support for change.

Sounds about right..

I have been a part of this forum before I even owned my first nikon DSLR. This group helped guide in the the right direction and has helped me grow. I would not have known how informative and helpful this forum was if it was not free. If there was a fee from the start, I would have turned the other direction. I am all for a fee (I think $15-25.00 is fair). This site is well worth the money.

New members should be allowed to browse the site on all levels for the first 30-90 days. In that time frame, they can get a good idea of the forum, what the members have to offer and what they can offer in return. I think less than 30 is too short. Some people come here initially to get information about their first DSLR purchase. They may take their time to make this purchase. I think 30-90 days gives them the opportunity to make a purchase, learn their camera/manual and then come here to learn more, ask questions or contribute. Once they have enough experience, they can make the choice to stay by paying a reasonable membership or leave.

As for the tiers, I think this will call for controversy. There have been several times where things have gone the wrong for the littlest things. I do appreciate the labels such as senior member or junior member. It lets you know how long they have been here and how much they contribute. If you add a tier to show how much someone has contributed or paid, it can be a backlash. Some members can throw it in someone else's face such as "well I am a full member blah blah blah" or "Im on the smaller package so I can't afford that or can't afford those services." Though we are all adults, sometimes it is best to not risk the chance of losing members or creating drama over a label.

As for what these different levels of contribution can be, I think offering members different services is good. I love the chat option. There are times where I wish I could chat with someone. I do believe that this will hinder the learning process because some may get comfortable with this feature and not contribute to the overall forum and learning process for all. I think a general rule should be apply that if they believe it will help others now or in the future, to post it in the forum rather than through a chat.

One idea I have for the tiers is for paying members (of all levels or amount of contribution) can have access to certain reasonable things. Moderators or volunteers can create their own tutorials through a video or a written content with photos describing the concepts. They can be different lighting techniques, posing, or how to capture certain things. Each month or more often, they can provide contributors with access to the videos. They can learn from them and make them feel as though their money has been well spent. A different topic can be discussed or shown. In the first week a video is posted and throughout the rest of the month, members show what they learned and post their photos to show their growth from the video. The videos or blogs can be very simple or difficult. I personally would love to watch them. It won't be a competition but a way to interact with one another and learn.

I hope this helps. Though I don't post every single day or week, I am here often reading behind the scenes. Without this forum, I wouldn't be where I am today.

I think most facebook users are used to the one-size-fits-all of the 'like' button. It could mean 'I like it', 'I saw it', 'I agree' or 'thank you'. I wouldn't mind separate buttons though, it would reduce forum clutter and notifications for simple thank yous and such.

Seriously, thanks for all the feedback everyone. I've read what you've all had to say and I'm formulating a plan for how things would need to be setup.

If you just started to see ads at the top of the page, that means you're seeing the first stage of my plan. Actually moving some components around and creating a placeholder for things.

I'll post more updates here as I get more things put together.

The ads don't bother me, we're used to seeing them everywhere. Seems ads alone should easily pay the cost of a server, and it seems a fair plan. Or maybe much like income tax, the Top Ten Posters could pay most of the cost. :)

Or, if the goal is simply for income, then the price should be stated, and we can decide from there. My objection is disguising it as degrees of "members contributions" instead of what it is. Just one opinion.

Why not leave as is and have an annual fee that kicks in once you have been a member for 6 or 12 months?
That gives anyone enough time to see the value in this forum.

Because I don't want to change the dynamics of the site :) One of the reasons I started this site is because I hated the way some other sites had a subscription based systems that hid content. I rather have a voluntary system.

Again totally OT, but @jdeg have you ever considered moving away from vBulletin??

I have - in fact, I run other sites using different software (Xenforo) and I've used various platforms in the past. If I changed things now it would totally disrupt how people interact with the site. Some people would just leave. I think, it would be more trouble than it's worth. That and I have no good reason to switch other than it being a lot more lightweight.

Post an address and I will send you a check today to help support the site. ;) I don't post a lot but I find this forum to be educational and at some times humorous. Well worth the limited amount of time I can spend on it.

You can't block viewing pictures on this site! It'd be dead in the water.
