Adobe Creative Suite Apps Now Subscription Only

Frankly, I think anything that calls itself "Creative Cloud" and will store data and projects on-line is by default a "cloud" service. Yes, it's not quite the same as other cloud services but the term "cloud" is far too new to have a defined definition. Cloud and cloud computing is an evolving concept and I'm sure what people think is a cloud today will not be the same as 5 yrs from now.

They are offering cloud services with it but using it is optional. So there's a cloud if you want it and not if you don't. Too many people assume Adobe is forcing them to the cloud but it just isn't so. All your images and software will be on your computer with the option to use a cloud for data if you'd like. What they are forcing on you is subscription pricing. Of course it could change to forced cloud someday but that's not today.

Adobe Community: Photoshop CC-cloudy thinking

Personally, I like the Creative Cloud subscription. I use InDesign, Illustrator, Premiere Pro, Acrobat Pro, Audition and Prelude, on both my PC's and my Mac. And I like dinking around with software, especially when they tie in with each other. Plus, photoshop on CC comes with digital publishing add-ons (for creating iPad apps). For $30/month, I have access to all of it from any of my computers, so it's worth it to me. I still have CS5 and Lightroom 3 as download versions (non-cloud). Although you can store files on their "cloud", I don't.

I could never afford to buy the entire suite of creative apps . . . over a thousand bucks. And I have to admit, I like their software . . . I used it way back (14 years) on a mac, (still have licensed copies of Golive, etc.) and for awhile, Macromedia was an alternative and I used some of those programs but never liked them as much.

That being said, I always dislike when options are reduced, and maybe this is an opportunity for other software companies to step up their game.

I am presently using CS5 but think this is going to make me go ahead and buy CS6 while it is still available. the one feature that keeps me with Photoshop in Content Aware Fill. That and HDR, Panorama, actions and scripts. Having all your toys in the same basket has its benefits.

I am old so CS6 should cover my bases for the years I have left.

You'll like CS6, it has a very Lightroom-esque than CS5 and the content aware function has been significantly revised and is supposedly better at adapting to complex backgrounds. I have to admit though, that I didn't use the content aware in CS5 as much as I have in CS6 so I cannot say from experience that it's better but others seem to believe it is.

You can upgrade to CS6 from CS5 extended (assuming you have that version) for $99 or something like that, which is why I went ahead and made the leap. But I don't know if they're still running this upgrade option. The bummer is that you don't get the extended version but frankly, unless you're doing 3-D animation, you'll never really use the extended functions. At least I never did.

Subscriptions? Are software makers and contents providers everywhere going to this model? We know Nikonians have been doing a long time. :)

YouTube starts paid subscription service

Many are. One of my favorite pieces of spam software was/is a piece of software called MailWasher. It was a great piece of software for years and really still is. Originally is was free upgrades in the same version. Then it went to Free upgrades for one year. That was not to bad. If you were happy with the software as it was then you did not need to upgrade or pay for additional years. Your software would continue to work from now on. With the last major upgrade they went to a one year model. At the end of the year it quit working and you would have to pay to get it back to working. I reverted back to the previous version and will continue to use it from now on.

I will not say never but it will have to be one more fantastic piece of software for me to pay a monthly or yearly fee to use.

Wife approved my purchase of CS6 tonight so I think that will be my final Photoshop.
