    Young ducks that haven't attained adulthood can be hard to identify, but this one is almost surely a female because of the dark eyes rather than red. Ducklings get their red eyes a couple of months after birth. In a few months this one will be a truly beautiful adult female. :)

    Those are adults, of course. It can be harder to notice the difference in immature ducks. :)

    The most obvious marking you can see in this picture is the red eyes. Also, the white line on his jaw that turns up almost to the eye, females don't have that, or if they do it is very faint.     This immature male Wood Duck may not have all his colors yet, but he is already a master at flying up into the oak tree and picking yummy acorns. :)
