How do you recognize it's a MALE wood duck?
The most obvious marking you can see in this picture is the red eyes. Also, the white line on his jaw that turns up almost to the eye, females don't have that, or if they do it is very faint. The female would have a white "mask" around the eyes, but you can see that this guy is starting to get dark feathers near the eye. Females have plain gray beaks, but you can see the colors on this guy's beak starting to show. There are differences in the markings on the body, too, but hard to see in this pic.

Young ducks that haven't attained adulthood can be hard to identify, but this one is almost surely a female because of the dark eyes rather than red. Ducklings get their red eyes a couple of months after birth. In a few months this one will be a truly beautiful adult female. :)

Your photographs are extraordinary @Woodyg3 and I never tire of them. I often carry my laptop into our kitchen to share them with my wife while she's cooking dinner. She enjoys them as much as I do. :)
