    First impressions of the Z8

I've only had 4 outings with the Z8. Actually 3, it never came out of the bag at the beach. New, expensive camera, salt and fine sand. :cautious: First of all, this thing is a beast! I was surprised it wasn't the same form factor as the Z7ii. Bigger, heavier, although that's not a problem for...

    First images with the Z8

Made a quick trip over to Cypress to try out the new gear. Made a few initial setting changes and headed over to the park to check out the AF capabilities. I was not disappointed. While not instantaneous or flawless, it did a very good job of finding and locking on to the bird's eye and tracking...

This makes things difficult for me, in a good way!

Well, I just got an unexpected check. I won't say exactly how much it is, but it's enough to indulge in some camera equipment. I've had the Z7ii for about a year now, and I'm very happy with it except for one thing. The autofocus for stuff like birds in flight and moving critters. I feel a...

Anyone getting excited about the Z90?

If the rumors are true, the Z90 should be coming out soon. Most claim a 33 MP crop sensor, 15 fps, precapture, and an expeed 7 processor with excellent autofocus capability. In essence, the follow on to the venerable D500, with most of the modern bells and whistles. It's supposed to come out...

    Feedback appreciated

This is an image I took this morning. I like it, but not sure the best way to edit it. Here are a couple iterations. I have no issue with honest opinions about. Just don't say anything bad about my cat. Here is the slightly cropped full aspect color version. Here is a panoramic...

Thoughts on a cage for your Z

I got my check for my contest winnings this week and I want to spend it on something photo related. It's only $75, so no 600mm F4 lenses or Z9 bodies. I've considered something like the small rig cage for my Z7ii for a while. I hesitated because the arca swiss mounting incorporated in it is the...

    I'm a happy camper today!

I have mentioned the "club" my daughter and I joined last year, the Carolina Nature Photographer's Association. They have a baker's dozen local chapters throughout the Carolinas. Believe me when I say there is a ton of talent among these folks in the nature photography genre. Anyway, they have a...

Post your photo gear you got for Christmas

I got a K&F Concepts ball head. I really like my gimbal head for birds and wildlife, bit it's not much good for macro or landscapes. I wasn't a big fan of the head on my old Bogen (Manfrotto) tripod, and really wanted something with an arca swiss style plate. I had a little talk with Santa a...

Working with a long exposure image

Don't know if this would be better in the evaluation section, but since I hope to get a discussion and some back and forth, I will post it here. I impulsively posted this image in the weekly challenge before I had thought the editing through. I would like to briefly go through the shooting and...

    Autofocus area question

When I got my Z7ii earlier this year I noticed I was having issues with soft images with a number of different AF area settings. I found that single point gave me good results, and I have been using that for almost all my shooting. When I'm not shooting macro, I use my 200-500 with an FTZ...

    Trying out long exposure

I've been wanting to try my hand at long exposures, with a mind to using this technique at a local beach. Here is the beach. This photo was taken at 1/6 sec. It has the look of motion, but I want to try some much longer exposures there to get that "fog" look. So, I bought a 10 stop ND filter...

And for all of you that hail from the British Isles. Sorry, no gravy.

Trying to copy some old slides

I ran across a box of slides I took back in the day. Most were probably taken on my Pentax ME. I tried my hand at a quick and dirty copy in camera using my flash for light and a double sheet of paper for a diffuser. Not happy with the results. Some if the issues may be the originals aren't that...

Post your: Let's do lunch shots!

I occasionally get lucky enough to get some shots when critters are having a bit of a snack. Usually the snack is not terribly pleased with it. I'll start it off with this robber fly munching on some kind of bee.

    What's up with Youtube?

Let me preface this with a statement. I am not looking to be "successful" on Youtube. I started posting mainly as a method of making it easy for friends and family to see what I am doing with photography. I was rather surprised and a little pleased when one of my videos took off in a small way...

    TTL flash for macro?

I've always heard that TTL is a no-no for macro flash. I assumed that the issue was that the subject is often a fairly small percentage of the frame and the background was a relatively long distance from the subject causing the system to overexpose the subject in an attempt to average the...

    A cold blooded portrait

I used to do some portrait work back in the film days. I normally shot in B&W, but this one seemed better in color. Model wasn't terribly cooperative, and absolutely wouldn't listen listen to my suggestions. She finally fell into a nice 3/4 pose, and I got the shot. Then it was gone and so was...

Need a quick opinion on a small tripod

I need to replace the Pup's travel tripod. Her old one gave up the ghost, more from being hauled around than actually used. As intimated, she doesn't use one often, but when she needs one.......... I happened to see that B&H has a big sale on right now, and goes off later today. I found a small...

    Name that bug!

I sometimes run across insects or spiders that I have a hard time finding on the internet. Not saying they aren't there, just that I can't seem to match up something with what I have taken a picture of. Thought it might be a good idea to start a thread where folks could post a picture of a small...

The Pup cleaned up in local photo contest

My daughter entered several images in the 50th anniversary photo contest at the Francis Beidler Forest, a local Audubon park we occasionally visit to take wildlife/nature photos. She managed to snag an honorable mention, 2nd place and even a 1st place. Dad is properly proud.
