Autumn Goldfinches

This is World Animal Day. Another day I was unaware of until Facebook so informed me. Anyway, I choose to post a nice, big bull elk sticking his tongue out at some tourists.:)

One Snowy Egret wanted the pond all to itself, and chased the other around until it left. Comical to watch. I think the geese were even watching. :)

Went out looking to get eagle and heron pictures today. No such luck, so I decided to get a nice Ring-billed Gull in flight rather than come home with nothing. :)

Elk rut is underway and this guy looks to be the biggest and baddest. He's bugling with rivals on either side of him, but they don't approach him. Maybe he has already won the battle. :)

On Monday I posted a picture of an adult male Red Crossbill. This is a juvenile, only weeks out of the nest. Next year this bird will either be yellow over most of its body, meaning a female, or red, which is male. Notice the pine cone on the right, compared to the one on the left that this bird...

This is only the second time I have photographed a Red Crossbill. They tend to stay back in the shadows and provide a real challenge to photograph. Their crossed bill is an adaptation to break into pine cones and get seeds that other birds aren't able to extract. Really fun to watch!
