Astrophotography - Deep Space Objects (DSO)

I have been watching videos for processing by removing the stars with Starnet++. I revisited my image of Andromeda from December. I added Starnet into the process. I had to move the operation to my laptop PC as the CPU in my main PC is too old to handle Starnet (discovered the hard way). So this...

    D810 will not power on

Did you attempt to push the shutter release button yet? I would try that 1st then try removing the battery and press-hold the shutter-release for 30 seconds to get the capacitors to discharge. Then put a charged battery back in and try pressing the shutter again if needed. That is about as far...

I want to like this photo

I was already wondering with the first photo what it would look like in sepia-tone. I liked what you had to work with better on the 2nd b/w image. So here is me taking liberty. I sharpened some, and I added local contrast. Then I changed to sepia and I like it. I think it bridges the b/w and the...

I want to like this photo

I can see you went for maximum separation from the background by narrowing the depth of field. But in my mind it would benefit from more depth so the fuzzy branches would look sharper. Then the sharp/soft elements would be the separation. It just looks so soft in the middle of the subject and...

    Anyone making slideshows?

You have competition from Gavin Hardcastle the past couple of weeks. He has been posting videos from a trip to Texas bayou country.

    NX studio 1.5.0

Bill, I've shared some of my workflow before. I take the "starving artist" approach and only use freeware. I am just a hobbyist after all, not selling anything really. I shoot Raw+JPEG mode and save Raw to card 1 and JPG to card 2. This method can work with JPEG only workflow also. I import and...

    Slide copying/digitizing with D3300

I am looking at this device lately. https://www.valoi.co/easy35 It is not so specific with filter threads since it comes with adapters to fit. Comes with a film negative holder (which is what I'm interested in) and a 35mm slide holder is available as an add-on. It has it's own light source...

    D3100 Won't record video

D3100 user manual can be downloaded here: https://downloadcenter.nikonimglib.com/en/products/19/D3100.html Pages 45-46: Rotate the Live View switch on Choose a focus mode with the "i" button at the lower left corner of the back Choose and AF Area mode as described on page 38 Focus (perhaps you...

    D3100 Won't record video

Shot in the dark since I cannot see your camera settings. Is there a lever or slide switch by the Live View control for changing to video? Perhaps set the mode dial to Auto. Unless that is where you change to video mode. I do know that generation requires you to change from photo to video mode.

    Using a SB-600 remotely with a Z5

I am home now and have poked around in the Z5 Reference manual (the one that would hurt if you dropped on your toes). The Z5 does indeed support Nikon CLS just like the older DSLRs. But you need need an SB-800 or better to be the master flash in the hotshoe. Looks like Nikon really intended for...

    Using a SB-600 remotely with a Z5

In reply to your SB-400 question, it cannot be used as a master or remote flash with Nikon CLS. I have one of those also that came before my SB-600.

    Using a SB-600 remotely with a Z5

Two options. Both require buying more stuff. SB-600 when it was introduced 18 or so years ago could be controlled remotely via the Nikon CLS which uses encoded flashes from a master flash to control a remote. In those days most DSLRs had a pop-up flash that could be the master. Or the even more...

    Seeking advice on eclipse photography

I can confirm, filter thread is 95mm. You can consider measuring the outside diameter of the lens hood and try a universal-fit telescope filter.

    Seeking advice on eclipse photography

Mark, I plan to use a Sigma 150-600mm lens with a full frame Z5. Based on my 2017 eclipse experience, 2000mm would be far too much if you want to capture the corona, which is kind of the point of photographing a total eclipse. If you were only going to be in a partial eclipse zone, a telescope...

    DX mode change

I agree with you in principle Clovis, but I also would have to believe the original poster has some kind of motivation here. Maybe his post processing workflow is automated and he does not want to crop at that time? Many possibilities I suppose. Maybe he attended the Jared Polin school of...

    Help with Forum Signature!

You walked the wrong path there. Go click once on your name near the upper-right (next to the envelope and bell icons). A drop-down window will appear. Do not click on your name again...instead find the "signature" menu item that is in the lower part of that drop-down and click on it.

    Z8 Firmware 2.0 Update

My dream team "never could afford it" 1-2 combo would be Z8 plus a ZF currently. The lower res sensor actually bring some advantages, such as smaller file sizes. I don't know if it is because I have a 14 year old computer with the matching 14 year old 23" display. It only runs at 1080 vertical...
