    intervalometer for milky way

You may have to provide a link to such a product that will interface to a D3400, or I would say it does not exist. I searched for the OP. There are many intervalometers for Nikon cameras, but they require the connector for a wired remote shutter release cable on the camera. The D3400 does not...

Hi, I'm new to this forum and want to say Hello to everyone!

Think of this less a thing for helping an amateur and more for helping an independent repair shop. In the USA (and I assume worldwide) manufacturers have been making it impossible for any repairs except by their own factory-authorized facilities. This has been locking-out competition from...

January 2025 Monthly Assignment: Wood and/or Metal ***Top Six***

There were great photos this month. I bet I never work so hard to produce 1 photo again. ;)

    Am I actually undead?

I checked the mirror again, I see myself. I'm a little afraid to try touching holy water.

    Am I actually undead?

It happened to me again today. It happens a lot. Automatic sink faucets and towel dispensers rarely are able to see me. I just spent a minute trying to wave my hands frantically under 2 different restroom faucets to get water to flow. Then I could not get a paper towel to dispense at 2...

I inherited some film-era Nikon stuff.

I kept all the flashes. If I get rid of any, 3 months later I will finally want to do a multi-flash setup with radio triggers. If I keep them, I will know it is an option then never do it. :) I've tried to think of projects for using the SC-17 cord as off-camera light, but I just keep coming...

I inherited some film-era Nikon stuff.

I revisited the N70 film door problem this past weekend. Thankfully this time I was too lazy to throw out anything after I put this camera down last summer. A small piece of plastic for the door latch that had broken off was lodged in tight to the door seal. That is what blocked the door from...

D5300 Viewfinder "Shift" - what to do?

I personally am suspecting the prism screen is loose. I don't believe you would see through the lens if the mirror did not fully drop down. I like the plan to upgrade to a D5600 best of the options. +$50 over a D5300 replacement is a no-brainer for that kind of upgrade in kit. That repair...

    Shutter Speed

I don't know. Either this is a feature and setting added by new firmware, or I might expect this if you are using a saved U1-3 custom setup.

January 2025 Monthly Assignment: Wood and/or Metal

I had to build my subject first. My future CPAP stand to replace a rickety cardboard box. Z5, SB-600 bounced flash, Z24-70mm f/4 @42mm, S-mode, 1/200, f/4, ISO 200

    D7000 with Sigma 150-600

I used that combination a couple of years. There is no secret or tweak to do. Use faster shutter speeds at longer telephoto lengths because shake that does not show at 50mm gets magnified 12x at 600mm. But that is true for any long lens on a camera.

    Suggestions on a mid-range Z zoom?

I think this is where the FTZ becomes a worthwhile investment. It brings in a lot of F lenses into play to fill a gap like this. You just want to verify you are buying a lens with its own AF motor instead of the older kind that use the screw-drive on the mount. I won't advise on a 70-300mm...

    SB-700 Speedlight - Z5 Controls?

There is a Flash Mode and a Flash Control Mode shooting menu items. As I reread page 569 of Reference Manual, looks like Flash Mode menu is available for all, and that is where rear-curtain mode is selected. Of course you must be in a mode where you manually select shutter speed to work. It is...

    SB-700 Speedlight - Z5 Controls?

Page 566 of the Z5 Reference Manual (the big 25MB manual) has the key information. It lists the flash units that can be controlled by camera menu, all others must be set by controls on flash. My SB-400 which has no control panel is controlled through the camera, but my SB-600 must be controlled...
