Wide Angle Focal lengths and Perspective

At what focal length/angle does a wide angle really start to show the perspective distortion? I want to get a wide angle but I want to keep it not so extreme. In a DX lens I am thinking around 18-35mm in a tele zoom or a 17-55mm tele zoom.

My bird shots are just horrible! I need some help!

You were right Brian. I stopped down a few stops while there was better sunlight today. Even though handheld, at 1/60th of a second shutter speed, I got a better more sharp image and this is heavily cropped. Aperture must be the issue. I also made sure to keep the ISO as low as possible and...

Interesting read on Nikon's VR system

I apologize if this is already here somewhere. I have not yet seen it anywhere and many of you may already know this information. I did not and it particularly interested me as I have the 70-300mm ED VR lens coming soon. It was also interesting that I read to NEVER remove the VR lenses from the...

Testing a Lens for Overall Quality

I posted this question in this section because I didn't mean for it to cover any one lens type in particular. After I receive my 70-300mm ED VR lens soon I will again review my lens collection and determine whether I will sell/add another or not. I was curious to see if there is a good lens...

Portrait Lens Choice Depending on your Subject

I was reading something tonight on portrait lenses (after the flurry of portrait lens posts lately) and I saw a brief mention of choosing a portrait lens according to the characteristics of your subject, i.e., age, physical size, other features etc. Why would this matter?

    Family Gathering Snapshot "Portrait"

Very good point and thank you. Maybe the issue with this particular photo, along with all of these from that night, are that none of these were photos that were asked for, planned or even really wanted by the guests. Photos were not even planned and never are at these events. No one ever...

    Family Gathering Snapshot "Portrait"

Here is one more attempt to make this shot "acceptable" to sell or print. I got rid of some of the shadow under the hat brim. Used some Gaussian blur and a touch of a vignette. Is it too much use of blur?

    Family Gathering Snapshot "Portrait"

Here is another crop and a conversion to B/W. Not a total desaturation. I also got rid of the Jesus figurine. I cannot make his pose any better. Still looks like he is holding the camera. His arm was cocked out and hand on his hip as he bent over a little to match his height with his wife...

I cannot believe how little people participate in this forum

People love to judge what others do. I know I do. It makes me look at my own work more closely. This forum gets very little in the way of replies and actual rated critique. I can't figure it out.

    Roll Tide . . . . Fail!

Very disappointed in today's Alabama vs. Auburn game. 'Bama is my team but today they really let me down. I really wanted them to play Florida State and whoop their butts. Not sure that can happen now. :crushed:

    Post your Birds in Flight

Re: Bird in Flight Dang! Had this been sharp I would have jumped for joy at my first BIF shot. Oh well, keep on trying!

    Next Photo Subject Game

Another interactive photo game! Rules are simple. One person posts a photo according to the subject dictated by the previous post. Once you post your photo for that subject you get to name the next subject. For instance, if I post a photo and name the next subject "jelly" then you would post...

Photos using older Nikon AI-S lenses

Anyone have photos using some of the older Nikon AI-S or AI converted lenses on their DSLR? I am considering a couple just to have for myself and I would like to see some shots using them. I am particularly interested in prime lenses such as the 85mm, 105mm, 135mm and 300mm fixed.

Thos quick and dirty "family gathering" indoor portraits

I have posted one of my portraits for critique and here I will post another and just get your general comments. Family comes in for thanksgiving and you have no way or area to set up a portrait area. You snap the best shots you think you can get at the time. This was my first opportunity to...

    Family Gathering Snapshot "Portrait"

Thanksgiving brings a lot of my family together every year. Typically they blow in and blow out like the wind so there is little time and absolutely no chance of setting up a small portrait area. Photos are taken on the fly and under much coaxing of the subjects to allow a photo. I guess we...

Couple of crop ideas for these. Also got rid of the phone pole and wires and a little dodging and burning.

This guy didn't want to cooperate with me for his photo shoot. He wanted to run away and I was surprised just how fast he was.
