My bird shots are just horrible! I need some help!

Another try today. Birds are finally showing up at my feeding stations so I was able to get comfortable and close. I tried a lot of different settings. I used all modes of the auto focus and did not like the center point mode at all. Every time I squeezed the shutter button, half way to focus...

My bird shots are just horrible! I need some help!

These were shot with that lens from just a few feet away but in good natural light. Same shot, just different crops.

My bird shots are just horrible! I need some help!

Just a quick check on ISO settings. I placed this computer board across the room and shot several pics with that 55-200mm lens. I know this is not a good test but the image shows the same nasty noise I see in those bird shots. I think this is going to be an ISO issue. First shot is at f/5.6...

My bird shots are just horrible! I need some help!

Here is a shot using the Nikkor 35-105mm lens at 105mm length, F/4, 1/250th sec at ISO 1400. It is an acceptable image quality to my eyes and none of that focus/blurring/noise I see with the bird shots. And this one using the 18-55mm DX ED lens. This was at f/5.6 at 1/60th sec ISO 400.

My bird shots are just horrible! I need some help!

And this one. It was the only almost keeper of the several I took of the geese. I was even closer to the geese than I was to the Ibis and I was only zoomed to 135mm. Still, this is trash. I must figure this out. EXIF Data: - Hand held - 55-200mm VR ED - f/5.6 - 1/200th sec - ISO 320

My bird shots are just horrible! I need some help!

I just don't understand what it is I am doing wrong. I got really close to these birds. They are regulars at my work because we have a large fresh water pond stocked with fish. They are mostly accustomed to people so I can get really close. Through my viewfinder I saw good sharp eyeballs on...

    First gig-senior portraits

What method are you going to use to present them? Web or on digital storage or actual prints? If displaying on the web or by digital album, try building some "frames" in Photoshop or another program. You will see many of the folks here that post their shots "framed" by a border constructed by...

    Post your latest purchases.

I went against Ken Rockwell's advice and purchased a very very nice Nikon Nikkor 35-105mm lens.

I didn't think it all that great of an image. I think I cropped it too close.

    Best images storage method/medium?

In another post I made in another forum I was told that CD/DVD was not the best medium on which to store images. If not on those two choices, what is the best way to store them other than on the computer hard drive? If I were mailing images to someone, other than using email, what would be...

    D90 out of production?

I read that it was out of production now. I guess it will get added to the "out of production" area?

    Mike D90's Digital Learning Thread

And a flower that I saw out back. Had to bring it inside. Wind was rough.

These leaves were also flapping wildly. Also, sun was coming from behind the leaves. Maybe too much shadow? Should have used fill flash maybe?

    Mike D90's Digital Learning Thread

Was at work and had a minute to step out back with the camera. No wildlife showed up so I wanted to test the shutter speed vs. aperture to capture fast motion. I just shot some leaves flapping in the wind. Today was very chilly and breezy so the leaves were moving quite rapidly. I need the...

Are the challenges and assignments still happening? I have read the rules and have been looking for the new challenge to come out and I have not seen one. Did I miss out?

    Tempting Photography Opportunity

I currently work part time at a local animal boarding kennel. It is a private kennel on a gorgeous piece of property and not ran or owned by any city or county entity. Most of the clients that board there aren't exactly poor folk but some aren't as well off and I expect I wouldn't get 100%...

    Lens conundrum

I told myself, when I got this D90, that I was not gonna be a lens collector and was gonna stick with three lenses max. Well, I can't seem to do it. I currently have the 50mm AF Nikkor f1.8 D, the 18-55mm AF-s f3.5 DX ED SWM, 28-80mm AF Nikkor f3.5 D and the 55-200mm AF-s DX ED VR SWM. I was...

Pop up flash and shutter speeds

I like using fill flash for outdoor photos but I have a question about what it changes. If I pop up my flash, and it is set to TTL, does it change my shutter speed automatically? What is the proper way to set the flash to get fill flash and keep a higher shutter speed?
