How to shoot during bright sunlight?

Well you have the option of shooting with the light facing the subjects or backlit. Above is a backlit example exposed for the subjects. It just requires a proper exposure and usually one test shot will help determine that (you could even use the histogram for the test image).

Downtown Boston Sites and Bombing Memorial

A large area of a central park in Boston is devoted to a memorial for the recent bombings. Was there on Friday. Street where the bombings occurred. Onto more positive images of the area.

Glamour Photography: Stretching the 85 mm 1.4's legs a bit ;)

Had some fun today with the D800 plus 85 mm 1.4 G....first time I had the lens really stretch its legs in terms of what it was meant to do (excuse the pun). Also got to test my new flash secret weapon, which seemed to work pretty well on the ladies. All of the shots below include flash...

    Trip to the Beach :)

Just for fun here are a couple more examples of photos taken with the combination of the 300 mm f2.8 Ai-S lens without the teleconverter showing what you can do with a 20 year old manual focus lens with the D800. Here's the original uncropped image. And here's 100% crop, and nothing was done...

    Trip to the Beach :)

Went with a couple of photography friends and my wife to a nature reserve on Sunday and here are a few pics. The area was actually kind of desolated by hurricane sandy but still managed to get a few shots. I tried out the 300 2.8 Ai-S with 1.6 autofocus teleconverter on the D800. I was...

    distasteful

I would not use that equipment even if I was alone in the desert amidst sand that matched it in every way and you gave it to me for nothing. Now this is more like it.... Well maybe not, I'll just stick with basic black, thanks very much.

    Post your latest purchases.

Thanks Pat and siamthai1, I plan to use the Flashbender to actually block direct flash when bouncing the flash off surfaces, so kind of the opposite way in which it was intended. Also a bit off topic but I was reading comparisons of the SB flashes and the SB800 is actually the most powerful...

    First picture for feedbalck

There's potential there. Perhaps a little bit brighter and a little bit closer on the center of interest, namely the white flower. You are adhering to the rule of thirds which is nice. There's a bit of competition by the larger stems for attention rather than the flower. Interesting that the...

Best Lenses for a DX camera?

If you are looking for a fast portrait lens for DX I would highly recommend the 50 mm 1.4 G. Prices have come down on them a bit I think as well. On my D7000 it is super sharp, so on your camera it would be amazing I think.

    Arches National Park

Wonderful photos. Arches is one of my all time favorite locations to shoot, if not the favorite. Was there years back (used to live in SLC) and just need to get my old slides scanned, hehe. Here are crappy quality scans from an old scanner years back (hope you don't mind me posting them here).

Springtime in Boston: A Photo Essay

Actually went out after work today to shoot some stuff around downtown. Cold evening, but nice overcast. All of these images were taken with the Nikon D800 and 85 mm 1.4 G lens. This was an exercise in sticking with just one focal length. Note the flag at half mast in tribute to those lost...

    Did some messing around today

Here's a little bit about what I meant (I know, a picture is worth a few hundred words). :) You could even try the first one as a black and white if the color is just too strange... Note that when it becomes a black and white image, it becomes a pure exercise in terms of tonal range and...

    Need Opinions on this lens

It is an outstanding lens for the DX format. The image in the viewfinder will be significantly brighter. You'll have much greater flexibility in terms of shutter speed given the wider apertures over the 18-55. It is going to make the photographic process more focused on the subject and less on...

Pray for those affected by today's bombings in Boston during Marathon

I was out with my wife today walking downtown when the bombs went off in Boston at the Boston Marathon and man all the activity of police, ambulances heading to MGH, FBI vehicles, police escorts, so many helicopters in the sky, people on cell phones leaving the scene....parts of the subway shut...
