Romanesque England: Saint Andrew in Little Snoring (2023) [Over the two weeks we spent in England at the beginning of May 2023 amid a whirlwind of feverish preparations for our daughter’s wedding, I managed to secure a few slots of free time to go and visit some of the very few churches still...

Not Hobbiton (2015) Old farm buildings in Basilicata (southern Italy), buried under a hill with a chimney tip emerging... It could be cute and remind one of Hobbits’ dwellings in The Lord of the Rings... alas! this was used by real human beings out of sheer poverty and inability to build a real...

The Cistercian abbey of Léoncel (2023) Bell towers on Cistercian churches are supposed to be quite humble and squat. No proud spires there, just pure functionality: the sole purpose is to make the bells heard to recall the monks working outside for Mass. Here in Léoncel, I find the bell tower...

Nice purchase, I hope you will like this lens. I tried it myself a few years ago, ended up finding it too heavy and bulky v. the 14-30/4 S. I couldn’t justify the difference and size and weight for the wider aperture, as I very rarely need to work between ƒ/2.8 and 4 for the kind of photography...

Thanks Cindy! Next, I tried with the Phottix Mitros Plus flashes, but despite them being “for Nikon”, and having worked fine for years with my Phottix Odin II transmitter;, they proved uncooperative, and I decided to resell them both. Instead I got a Godox AD200 Pro II which is almost the same...

The Cistercian abbey of Léoncel (2023) The church of Sainte-Marie de Léoncel is all that is left of the Cistercian abbey that was founded in this valley of northern Drôme (southeastern France) in 1137. The church was quickly built, as it was consecrated in 1188. However, some remodeling and...

The Mitros+ haven’t proved very cooperative. I have decided to sell them both and acquire a Godox AD200 Pro II instead. The form factor, bulk and weight seem fine.

    Z8 with 600, long lens case/holster recommendation

During the years I used to lug such a lens on the D3 or D3S, I used a Lowepro bag called Lens Trekker 600 AW. I think the then-current version was the II, possibly the III. It was excellent in all respects, look it up. Don’t know if they still make them, otherwise maybe look at secondhand.

Ladies in Waiting (2015) In July and August 2015, we spent a few weeks touring the southern Italian provinces of Basilicata, Puglia and Campania. A Summer shower broke as we were about to start our visit of the Pæstum Temples site and we sought shelter under the wide sun umbrellas of the...

Oh yes, they all are —or most of them, at any rate. You can see some of them in situ on this lengthwise view of the nave, taken from the tribune. You can also see how all the supporting arches (the older, barrel triumphal arch in the back, the less old, slightly pointy Cluniac arches along the...
