    D850...I have a D500

I've always believed that should should only buy expensive camera gear to satisfy a real need for your photography. I've not always lived up to that ideal. I upgraded from a D3400 to a Z5 last year. The major reason for me was to take advantage of the full sized sensor. That turned out, IMO...

Computer upgrade for LR and possibly Topaz

I have the current LR/photoshop via per month payments. Is there even an option to actually purchase the software now? I agree that the newer masking tools are great.

Computer upgrade for LR and possibly Topaz

A quick update. I had to order the RAM, and it came in Thurs. I got it installed Fri. Lightroom seems to run a little faster and smoother. I haven't had any slowdowns or crashes yet. It's still a little slow exporting files. That may be the i5 processor, or the onboard graphics, or both. I can...

    Lens recommendations.

I have the 24-70 F4 mounted on my full frame Z5. It is an excellent lens. It is not, however small or light. Take that into consideration. It weighs in at over a pound. You intimated that size is an issue. It will likely seem huge compared to the 16-50 you currently have.

    Lens recommendations.

Welcome to the forum. First off, Canon lenses are not going to be a viable option. While it's possible there is an adapter(s) to get one to mount up, it's not going to be practical IMO. Stick with either Nikon, or 3rd party manufacturers, like Sigma, Tamron and Tokina, and get one that is made...

    The Duck Thread

I know this is a duck picture thread, but I thought it would be interesting to show the larger area that the picture was taken. I've been taking a lot of pictures in this swamp lately. There are a lot of birds nesting there right now, so a lot of activity going on. All those dark bumps in the...

    The Duck Thread

Here is the small lake (actually it's an old rice field) where I shot this teal. It was on the far side of the lake behind the rookery. The mist on the water was gorgeous. The picture doesn't convey the beauty and wispy quality of the mist. In the picture it looks like just a light mist. In...

    The Duck Thread

Got back out to the Audubon Swamp this morning. It was cold and there was a beautiful mist hanging over the water. Later in the morning I got a chance to get close to this teal. Managed to splay out the tripod and get close to the ground for a low angle shot. Still had to crop it a decent...

    Center-weighted metering options?

Don't try that with transparencies, kids. If it wasn't right, straight out of the camera, there was no real fixing it. I am somewhat nostalgic about film photography, but I wouldn't go back. Heck, I recently gave my dad's beloved Rollei 3.5F to my niece, since it was just gathering dust in a...

    Topaz Denoise, Sharpen and Gigapixel

Do you have to edit in LR? No, but most RAW images I get really need at least a little help to look decent. Some need a lot. Shooting in RAW pretty much presupposes that you are going to post process, and as Fred said these programs pretty much only denoise and sharpen. RAW files almost always...

    Center-weighted metering options?

Well, there is no doubt, in my mind anyway, that good, modern digital sensors are far less dependent on the "correct" exposure than film was. Especially when it came to slide film. I remember the good old days of dodging, burning, push processing, choosing a paper contrast, and choosing a paper...

    Topaz Denoise, Sharpen and Gigapixel

Well, I see that the bundle I have entitles me to download Photo AI. I have a 16 GB stick of RAM coming tomorrow for my computer, so I may have to download and try it. Maybe this weekend, if I get the RAM installed.

    Topaz Denoise, Sharpen and Gigapixel

Thought I would try Sharpen AI on something else. I picked an out of focus BIF that suffered from motion blur. Here is the image processed (badly, I didn't spend much time on it) in LR. I did add some sharpening to the bird only. And here it is after running through Sharpen AI and then...

    Topaz Denoise, Sharpen and Gigapixel

Tried, Email wouldn't let me send a file over 25 MB. LR and PS wouldn't let me resize and save as an NEF. At least I couldn't see a way to do that. I did try Gigapixel on the image and ended up with this. No additional sharpening or editing in LR other than crop. Art was the only option that...

    Topaz Denoise, Sharpen and Gigapixel

I finally decided to see what would happen if I used the sharpen slider in LR on both images. I'll let you decide on how well the program worked on this image. Just for reference, this is the full, unedited image. Here is the unprocessed image with the sharpness slider at 116. For reference...

    Topaz Denoise, Sharpen and Gigapixel

Well, I am working my way through the programs. I have already posted some on this subject, and thought I should create a new thread on it. I am finding the programs to be a mixed bag. Worth the money, but they don't work well on all subjects and situations from my limited experience. I find...

Computer upgrade for LR and possibly Topaz

Looks like the version I'm running assigns 25 out of 100 noise reduction. Of course, it won't allow any plugins, so I'm using Topaz as a stand alone. I have been just bringing the RAW unedited file into Denoise, or Sharpen, then saving it as a DNG file before bringing that file up in LR. It's a...

Computer upgrade for LR and possibly Topaz

OK, bought and downloaded them today. Played around with them briefly. Not sure about Sharpen. Gigapixel did a great job on a couple old family photos. Denoise seems to do a better job than I can with Lightroom. I need to dig into the slider and other options to maximize denoise. I'm a little...

Computer upgrade for LR and possibly Topaz

What would you recommend? The bundle of three, or Photo AI? My computer and my daughter's would meet the minimum requirements for Photo AI, after I get the RAM upgrade (ordered). I'm just afraid that it will run slow or have issues with minimum required hardware. The individual programs have...
