    Helene's " Kritter Korner"

"Strolling . . ." I made a trip to Roswell this weekend and on the way back, just outside the little "frontier town" of Lincoln, this huge elk was strolling casually across the road. I stopped in the middle of the road (the benefits of driving on country roads!) and shot the photos through the...

    Nostalgia

Another rainy day today, so I took some time "decluttering" my computer desk. I came across some software (in a packaged CD) that I had forgotten I had and never reloaded to the new systems since the frequent upgrade. So I loaded the CD, the software installed without a hitch. I had the...

"Serious" Photographers . . . food for thought

Since we've been bemoaning the trajectory of "professional" photography in other threads, I though I'd post something that I consider a little more uplifting. Although not a fan of entering competitions (especially if they cost $$ lol), I do like a lot of what this judge says about entering...

    HDR Efex and Smart Filters

Just processed a couple of photos in HDR Efex. I love the features . . . can't believe I hadn't tried it before. I guess I was just too complacent in my workflow . . . didn't want to change it. First question: what is the advantage of using the "smart filter" feature? Below is what it looks...

My "Backyard (et al)" by ohkphoto

In the Corner of my Yard These little "weeds" grow about 3ft tall with lacy foliage and topped with about a half-inch wide blossom. Some people consider them "pesky undesirables" . . . but I love them and don't mow them down until they've dried out.

My "Backyard (et al)" by ohkphoto

Was not happy with the first version. Thinking back to what made me want to make this photo, the sunflowers should have been the center of interest. The HDR detail enhancer left the photo too "busy" with all the details. so I reprocessed in Photomatix tone compression and I'm much happier...

My "Backyard (et al)" by ohkphoto

Bosque del Apache Wildlife Refuge . . . Just down the road (and across the mountain range). In a few weeks these fields will become marshes for the cranes and snow geese. Right now they're full of sunflowers, lush green foliage, and mosquitoes.

    An Unlikely "Love Affair"

LOL what fun comments to wake up to . . . you sweet guys. "Though ye jest, 'tis still fun to hear." Thank you all for your very valuable feedback, and based on all of it, here are my conclusions. The problem I had with the photo was a "center of interest" issue. (@Whitelight...

    An Unlikely "Love Affair"

I'm trying to develop a fondness for subject matter I'm not usually drawn to. I shot this on the main drag in town . . . I found the color and the reflection intriguing. I keep coming back to this photo so obviously, there's something I like about it, but am not sure that it's earned its way...

    Portrait Editing

. . . and, fyi, I may have my share of "laugh and life lines", but, I'm pleased to say that my boobs (and @$$) have NOT succumbed to gravity, . . . yet.

    Portrait Editing

I had a client contact me about a photo session . . . she just got published and needed a photo for the book jacket . . . everything she had looked like the "before" pic and her words to me were exactly, "can you take 15-20 years off my face?" We did a photo shoot, I used Portrait Professional...

    Save the Rhino

Wildlife photography is tough. Sometimes you don't have time to make the photo that matches your VISION. I love your message, and what strikes me the most besides the meaning of your message is that you captured the bird in flight directly in front of the rhino's horn. As I see it, the center...

    Conversation in Mustard

Hi, Alex, and thank you for letting all of us "play" with your photo, which is a fabulous capture. I think in terms of technique, Jake is absolutely correct with his assessment of the lines and distortion. I took his version and went one step further: I would NOT crop anything out of the photo...

    Rock n Roll Photography

If you're into shooting bands or covers for musicians, you might find this of value. Some interesting techniques using smoke and a zoom lens ( He had to go back to the Nikon D3s because LR does not recognize the D4 in tether). (You have to get past the "middle finger" thing . . . sigh . . . )...
