What lens you are using is important. If it has an aperture control ring on lens you must have it adjusted to the highest f-stop. Often there is some kind of lock to keep it there so the camera can control aperture. Or try a different lens.

Your eyes are unable to see what is in focus? Zooming in allows you to see the micro details of the photo to judge focus. Turn the focus ring and watch the details get sharper or blurry.
