    Marilynne's Wetlands and Other Stuff - 2026

Daytona was a great place to grow up back in the 60s and early 70s. I was surprised when I went back for a couple class reunions at how few people stayed in the area. The population growth in Florida has been overwhelming. We are starting to have the same problem here in South Carolina.

    Clovis' Nikon Nuggets 2026

Cold and foggy at Magnolia today. Fog stuck around all morning, which made shooting difficult, and the birds weren't as active as usual. Bad hair day. Did I mention it was cold and foggy? And, yes, this is a color image. It was just a gray day. This was my favorite of the day. Looks...

    Post your Photographing the photographer.

I bought a folding hunting chair at Wally World yesterday on clearance. I plan to use that for times when I should be staying in a spot for long periods of time. If I can be comfortable, I am more likely to be patient and wait for the action to come to me.

Is it a real image, or is it AI?

Here is the original image. I was playing around with it using some of the filters in PS. When I tried the oil painting filter, I was struck by how much it looked like so many of the AI images you see on Youtube. I believe I have created a new category. Fake AI images. They look like real...

Thinking about a camera harness system

The other option I have considered is to replace the small OEM foot with a larger, more comfortable foot. Unfortunately, while that would help, it suspect that it would still be an issue after a couple hours of carrying around. The combo weighs about 6 1/2 lbs. Not that bad, but it does add up...

What do you think? No peeking at the EXIF.

Thinking about a camera harness system

I'm getting a little tired of carrying my Z8/180-600 combo around all day. I've considered something like the cotton carrier system. I just hate to spend the money not knowing if it will suit my needs. I was a little put off by it not coming with an arca swiss compatible plate, although they...

    Heated Gloves

I have a pair of knit gloves that I cut half of the index finger and thumb off. That allows me dexterity for the controls and covers all but a small portion of my hands. I had a pair of gloves that have half fingers, with a mitten covering that you can pull over the fingers, or pull back and...

    Almost shot a wedding today.

Similar experience for me. I shot one wedding back in the film days. When I was active duty, another member of the squadron was getting married. He wanted me to shoot it. I declined until he said it would either be me, or a friend with an Instamatic. I told him to buy me a couple rolls of film...

    Almost shot a wedding today.

Went back over to Cypress this afternoon to see if the wood ducks would gather late in the afternoon as promised. New Flash: They didn't. I arrived early and made the rounds to see what things were like in the afternoon. As I was walking the trail, I ran across a group of dressed up folks on...

    Clovis' Nikon Nuggets

Thanks. I was hoping for something from either the front or the side, but the year is still young. I hadn't had any chances for any airborne duck shots all morning. I was walking the trail back to the parking lot when a pair of woodies around the corner spooked. I just had time to throw the...

    Clovis' Nikon Nuggets

Went over to Cypress Gardens this morning to check out what the wood ducks were doing. I'm going to try hard and get some good ducks in flight images this year. This is my first attempt. Not the best, but it's a start. I did get a decent shot of one in the trees. And this yellow rumped...

    Clovis' Nikon Nuggets

Tried my hand at some soap bubble macro. Not as easy as it looks. I need to change my lighting setup and work on DOF.

    Woody's Hermosa Luz 2026

Great shot. You are able to shoot this in full sun with an extra stop of exposure compensation and yet no blown highlights? I usually have to underexpose birds with white feathers at least one stop, sometimes as much as 2.5 stops.

D3400 with Nikon AF-S DX Micro NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G - Live View manual focus?

Use full all the time. The only reason to use infinity to .2M is if you are using AF, have a distance to subject of more than .2M, and are having trouble with the system "hunting" and going from infinity to minimum (.163M) back and forth. I doubt the focus limiter will affect manual focus, but I...

    Mirrorless in 2026, maybe!

My experience was that neither the Z5 or Zii was decent with AF on BIF.

D3400 with Nikon AF-S DX Micro NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G - Live View manual focus?

I have no idea whether the focus limit switch does anything when you are in manual focus mode (I suspect not), but I would advise to keep it at full. I usually switch to birds in the winter, but there are still lots of subjects to be had in the winter. I've seen some stunning shots of frost on...
