    Let's see some reptiles...

No, I don't mind that at all. I actually did exactly the same thing to this image, but ended up liking the original better. Here it is edited from the original RAW file to preserve more detail before compressing.

    Let's see some reptiles...

I was torn with this one. If I crop heavily, there is a lot of really cool detail in the feet and belly. Unfortunately, it also tends to play havoc with the composition. OK, I went ahead and cropped it, and uploaded. Now that I see it on it's own, the first one is definitely the way to go...

    Monopod suggestions

Which one, the Bogen 3025, the Desmond or the Ulanzi? I find the Bogen to be rather fiddly on the tripod. With the little bit I used it on the monopod, I found it easy to use, since I was only interested in adjustment in one plane. For those who aren't familiar with it, this is the Bogen...

    Post your Moon Shots

Re: Moon HDR Went out and shot a couple with the D3400. Hard to tell whether they have more detail than the full frame images. My gut feeling is that they are. AF on the D3400 worked just fine as well.

    Post your Moon Shots

Ok, ya'll have me hooked on moon shots. Problem is, it's difficult to do something different. I managed to do that to a small degree with the previous post. The thin clouds made for some additional interest in the image. The best of the shots was a little overexposed. Thought I work to correct...

    Monopod suggestions

After playing around with the HEAVY 200-500, I'm thinking I need a monopod. I dug out an old shooting stick that had a broken rest on top. Fortunately, that rest attaches with a 1/4 20 stud. I tried it out in the yard, and found I liked it, but it is definitely too flimsy for 6.5 pounds of lens...

Using a full frame in DX mode

I haven't tried the enhance feature yet. Have you had good luck with it? I like that Gigapixel is a buy vs rental. Since I have Lightroom and PS, I probably should try that first and switch if I like what I see and want more. Edited: I tried the enhance in LR. It obviously is hardware...

Using a full frame in DX mode

When I got the new 200-500 tele to use on my Z5, I was thinking that if I needed more reach, I could just mount it on my D3400 body, and would have an effectively longer lens. I realize that there are advantages of the full frame sensor beyond MP, but both the half and full frame sensor are...

    Old School Movies?

This is old school movies. I have one like it sitting in a closet somewhere around the house. I also have a pile of movies my dad shot with it back in the 60s. A $40 cell phone runs rings around it these days for video.

    For the diabetics/caregivers out there

My wife was recently diagnosed with type2 diabetes. RN and doc suggested we try the Freestyle Libre system. This is one of the new technologies that has filtered down to the patients. It consists of a sensor patch that is applied to the back of the arm, and a reader that wirelessly reads it. The...

    Post your latest purchases.

After getting the 200-500 lens, I discovered my current camera bag was not going to cut it. The Pup has had this backpack bag in a different color for a while and has been happy with it. I decided to try one and see how it goes. Price was pretty good, and quality seems good. The only down...

Post your computer background suitable pictures

If you are like me, you like to occasionally change the background on your computer to one of the images you have recently shot. It's great when they have that "new photo" smell. Most of you have noticed that there are some pictures that seem to work better as a background, than other images...

    Post your dragonflies and bees/wasps

For some reason the dragonflies seem to really like the antenna on my old beater car as a perch. Almost every time I go out the door there is one resting on the little ball tip of it. Some are a little skittish and others will let me get quite close. Unfortunately, it doesn't present the most...

    200-500 F5.6 first impressions

And just to bore you with a few more. I haven't had the opportunity to go and give it a real tryout. Just popping out in the yard and taking a few on the fly. It's been hot, and I needed to wait for a cleaning kit to come in and clean my Z5 sensor. Think I have that sorted, hope so anyway...

    200-500 F5.6 first impressions

Got a chance to go take a few more test pictures today. I'm really liking this lens so far. Here is a picture at near closest focus. It is exposed at F11 at 1/500 sec and I shot it from a tripod. Heavily cropped first, and full size for comparison. I think I need to clean my sensor. I'm...

    200-500 F5.6 first impressions

Well, the FedEx truck showed up a short while ago and delivered a huge box. Yep the Nikon 200-500 F6E ED VR from B&H had arrived. I eagerly unboxed and mounted it up to my Z5 with the FTZ adater. I was a little nervous that the lens might not perform as well with the adapter as a native mount...

    Thinking outside the box.

Not to belabor the point, but right now I have to stay around the house, to take care of my wife. She is improving well, but it will likely be a few months before I am free to go spend time on outings. I have recently gotten back into photography, and want to take pictures, I have lots of...
