    Going home tomorrow

This cultural black hole and winter weather is just not what I expected. I have finished up a month early from what I was sent up here to do and I talked it over with the lab supervisor and she begrudgingly allowed me to go home early. I did not get the wildlife photos I wanted to get up here...

The caribou are starting to come into view

I have seen them off a ways in the tundra behind the hospital but right now they are a mile or so away. As it gets colder I am told that they will move in closer. A polar bear strayed into town last week and was promptly shot and killed. It was skinned and it's body left by a dumpster to rot...

    "Salt Life" font

Does anyone know where I can find a ttf font similar to the "Salt Life". I found one on the web about year and a half ago and it is on my desktop, which unfortunately is about 5000 miles away right now. My search so far today has come up goose eggs

    Post photos of your darkrooms!

I know that most of the people who frequent this site no longer process and print film, but if you do, post a photo of your "photo office" here! I love seeing other people's darkrooms! As you can see, mine is a converted bathroom and although cramped, I still have all the space I need to...

The sun is peaking in and out of the clouds in Barrow today...........

So I will venture out today, camera gear in hand and see what I can shoot! The Natives came in about last night around 10 PM with a catch of walrus they had caught. The meat and blubber gets divvied up amongst the natives. The tusks on that that thing were massive, probably 2 feet long. I only...

Barrow AK is quite a change for me!

When I left Pensacola FL last Saturday it waas 89º and sunny. I arrived in Barrow the next day and was greeted by 36º, foggy and light rain. It was culture shock to say the least. This time of year it is light 24 hours a day. I am told in another couple of months the caribou will be all over the...

Signing off for a little while....

I have to finish getting packed for 13-26 weeks in already-frigid Barrow AK. Not really sure what my work schedule will be, one of the bad things about working in a hospital is your schedule is never set in stone and weekends are often just another part of the work week One thing is for sure...

I got my itinerary to Alaska today. TWENTY FIVE HOURS of travel time for crying out loud! Pensacola to Houston to San Francisco to Anchorage to Fairbanks to Barrow. I leave Pensacola just after noon on Saturday and arrive in Barrow about quarter after 10 the next morning (but they are 3 hours...

    Barrow AK here I come!

I am headed to Barrow AK in a couple of weeks for a 13-26 week gig at the hospital there. It services and area about the size of WA state. I will be basically starting up a Microbiology lab for them. It should be a lot of fun but I will have to go dig out a lot of my Army cold weather gear. It...

For folks newer to photography. I am sure somewhere on the web there is an "app for that". How many stops?

The latest in my "Back to the 60's" project

I just got around to processing the film I shot from last week. The more I use that "antique" 105mm f/2.5 Nikkor P non-AI the more I like it. Sometimes less sharpness, more flare and lower contrast just make the image and add to the charm. The best $50 photo investment I ever made

    Connection

For the longest time I have tried to come up with a way to project the emotions that I feel each time I look at this image and I think I may have finally hit upon it.

    Sunrise over Mt Rainier

This was one of my earlier attempts (around 1986) at applying the Zone System to 35mm. My wife and I and our 8 month old daughter (who is now 28) spent the weekend hiking and camping on Rainier. I got up about an hour before sunrise (it was about 25º out) and hiked to this area, which I had...

    "Floating" Mt. Rainier

Taken from atop the Seattle Space Needle one early winter (by virtue of the fact that there are still bare patches on Mt Rainier) on an uncharacteristically clear day, Mt Rainier seems to "float" due to the haze. Nikon F2, 55mm f/2.8 AIS Micro Nikkor and Kodachrome 64
