Caught two shots yesterday of eastern railroad heavyweights CSX and NS. CSX appeared at Laurens, SC and NS at Spartanburg, SC. No matter where I stood in Laurens, I was surrounded by signposts and poles.

Caught Norfolk Southern train 192 today at the south end of the siding at Simpson, SC. Railway signal hounds will note that the signal lacks a number plate, so is an "Absolute" signal, aptly named because a train cannot stop upon a red signal here and then proceed at limited speed. NS adds an...

A snapshot from my teen years in about 1976 shows Soo Line 777 at Deval Interlocking at Des Plaines, IL. Taken with a Nikkormat FTn. I miss open cab windows and friendly waves.

In view of the summer heat, I find myself indoors suffering from the want to see train. I went out this morning to seek a photo spot, but the location was badly backlit. Knowing that a train was due and that the shot would suffer from bad light, I took a walk on the wild side and chose a...

Just too hot and humid to be out chasing trains. Best to be inside I suppose. Made some progress on my model railroad block control panel. Yes, I went a little nuts with the LEDs. The panel provides some spare positions for layout expansion or things I failed to think of.

This industrial spur has a branchline look about it and when matched with vintage power, can make for a nice picture.

Thank you. The SOU unit went north to the big yard in Linwood, NC, then came right back south through Columbia. I'm not sure why, but it was spotted all by itself today. I couldn't get close, but was able to get this shot. Somebody needs to get busy with a weedwhacker ….. One of...

NS's Southern Railway Heritage Unit arrived in Columbia, SC today under overcast skies and as with Friday's N&W unit, the SOU too was trailing. Oh well, it's a better shot than I'd taken in 2018 with it hiding in the trees.

In a moment of serendipity while hoping to catch NS's N&W Heritage Unit, I heard the CSX Dispatcher mention that Amtrak was near. Seeing Amtrak in daylight is a mighty rare occurrence in Columbia, SC, so I hotfooted it over to the station to see what was up. The southbound Silver Star had hit...

A few years ago I found a vintage Southern Railway signal bridge and signals standing on the mainline in Lowell, NC, but wasn't able to catch any trains passing beneath it. I stopped by today for the first time since and was thrilled that it's still in service. I had better luck with trains today.

Out of the wayback machine comes an old snapshot from the mid-1980s taken in Montgomery, AL of Seaboard System GE U-30C 1553, ex-L&N. It became CSX 7247 and is long off the roster. I don't know what became of it.

They're both beautiful. I prefer a bit less roadbed and more sky in my shots, perhaps something like I edited below. (I hope that it was okay for me to use your photo to illustrate.)

Thank you. I wanted to get the old Southern Railway station sign in the shot, so had to stand along the shoulder of the highway which was a bit worrisome. I staked out the spot, figured out my settings and stood in a safe place until train time. Here's a close up of the sign, battered and...
