These beetles are the cause of one of our worst environmental disasters ( + the stupidity of some people concerned )
Cane Toads Invade, Conquer Australia
CaneToads were introduced into Australia from Puerto Rico in the 1930's, it was thought they would eat the Cane Beetles which caused damage to the Sugar Cane crops. The Toads didn't eat the Beetles, but have bred profusely, and have invaded the top half of Australia. Their toxins kill the native animals that come into contact with them. They kill anything from birds to crocodiles.

I don't even want to take a photo of those stinkin toads Roy, they are treated with the greatest contempt around here.

I can't resist adding this one, I don't normally see these birds in the daylight hours, so I never thought I would get a decent shot of one.
I was doing some work on my driveway this afternoon after some heavy rain and I disturbed a family of these birds in a clump of ferns beside the driveway. A couple of them didn't go too far, so I went back to the house and got the camera and tripod.

I was hoping for a better shot of the Rainbow Bee-eaters so that I could post them here, this is my only sighting here in 13 years.
