No, I haven't downloaded it. I just used GIMP's layers. Removing the power pole /lines took some time, but the layer overlays was pretty quick and dirty. Ha!

OK, so how did you do the after after work???
The first after I threw all the sliders to 100 in ViewNX2 except one, which was -100 (either contrast or brightness).
The second one I used Pixlr and really don't remember. I did play with color correction and something else in overlay and added a border.

It really is. I noticed a little early on with Lr but dismissed it as my inability to use the program. Then recently i wanted to enjoy looking at the deer images from the winter and couldn't ignore what i was seeing.
The differences could be confused for sharpening or other adjustments but try as i may they can't be made the same. I don't edit in the color channels in Lr though. Maybe someone with more time than me could do something with that.
What I noticed when doing the two tulip comparison is a difference in file-size which is only possible when there is a loss in variation during conversion. I'd have to test it more but it seems the DNG converter has more uniform pixels in the DNG than the NEF (or TiFF) which could very well result into a loss of detail. 5% is quite a lot when it's in a noticeable part of the shot. It's also possible there still some tweaking required with the D7200 files for LR. It's a pretty new cam which might have its profiles updated.
In your case the difference is rather dramatic which is more than I ever expected it to be. I'm going to test that and compare it with RT too. If there's that much loss in other editors, I think I'll do every shot for every cam in Capture first.
I used an example that showed as much improvement as i could. With the deer shots there is a big difference; which i believe has to do with the lack of highlights. The bird shots i've tried (albeit just since yesterday), show improvement but not nearly as much.
It's possible. I read about highlight differences between LR and other editors but usually they're quite minimal. The shot you took might be the few exceptions where it really shows. But it's also possible there's some other reason. LR standard applies some sharpening and noise reduction which might erase that detail and by fully disabling it, or tweaking, it might be recoverable.
