Thought I better just post a photo here to keep things going.
I must say not having to shoot every day is allowing me a lot of freedom to pursue other photography related stuff.
This photo was a nothing shot but with a bit of a play in LR and PS it pops a bit.
It was fun.

I get the same between PS and bridge. I wonder if it is something to do with background colour as what is surrounding your shot when you view it. I have 2 slightly different shades of grey in PS and bridge.

Righto - after much debate (see this post) and experimenting with focal points and focal modes I shot a whole heap of photos in very confusing light.
I thought I would post some of the pics to indicate exactly what I was asking of the camera.
They were all very noisy when they came out of camera and I have done a bit of PP - mainly noise reduction and a bit of cropping.
In no particular order and for no particular reason I processed these.

They look great Lawrence, your PP has cleaned up the noise nicely.

I get the noisy look on my shaded area shots as well, can be frustrating at times.

Thanks mate. It was an interesting exercise and I felt comfortable with the camera and all the buttons and settings. Pretty decent to have them all right there and accessible on the fly. I felt like I had heaps of time despite a lot of stuff happening all around me.

I think the images convey the feeling of the wood surrounds pretty well.

Tomorrow - the zoo (weather permitting) although I am not that keen on animals in zoos. I am, after all, from Africa where these things run wild (as they should) but it is what it is and I am there to practice.

My neighbour is a part time photography tutor and invited me along to the zoo with his class today.
Had a great time and took over 300 shots - getting used to the D7100

Still not mastered the noise on the 70-300 but I am getting there.
I just loved these two shots despite the noise.

Thanks Scott.
I have just been going through the shots from today and have decided I have two options:
1. Take up landscapes only and always use a tripod or
2. Find a way (exercises or something" to improve my handholding techniques.

Most of my photos are either slightly blurred or at high ISO with unacceptable grain.

So what exercises do you recommend Mr. Tripod?

My first ever attempt at photo stacking.
6 shots handheld.
I must go back and get the one leg that protrudes forward in sharp focus but other than that I am pretty happy with this novice effort.
As always - it looks better in full size.
