But tripod has not been used on bugs
my off camera flash sucks ... actually a lot of things suck but I am working on it.

@Lawrence you know what, its been so long I have tried macro that I could not even focus on the stupid things I photographed. It just goes to show it is just about technique, perserveernace, and practice. If you are out practicing morfe than me than you will getthe shot. I have a friend who usess a lumix and gets better shots than me
I've tried the patience thing - doesn't work with my character. :
Point me to your diffuser set up ... errr ..... now!

Haven't seen these fella's for a while now. I spotted 2 different ones today chasing greenants , with the wind blowing the leaves around, the spiders constantly moving around, either chasing the greenants, or being chased by them, and me getting covered in greenants and getting bitten for my troubles, I didn't get too many good shots, in fact they were all a bit soft but I kept these 4 anyway .

I wanna know how you manage to find so many insects. I can spend an hour out in my place and find nothing much. Even digging in the garden ( I don't do that very often), clearing weeds etc I rarely find a worm, or bush cockie, or spider

. I have been doing a half hour walkaround the last few days in the late afternoon, the insects aren't as plentiful lately, due to the heat I think, but I always manage to find something to annoy with the lens and flash. Its a good day when I find a new Jumping Spider that I haven't seen before.
Manual focus is the way to go for bugs, just turn the focus all the way in till it hits the stop then back it off about 10mm, so you aren't quite at 1:1. Once it is set there you won't have to touch it again until you want to shoot something other than bugs.
Look through the viewfinder and use your neck to move your head in and out, that is how you focus. Focus on their eyes.
Keep your tripod for the landscape shots
, it is no good for live bugs.I get my best shots just using the cameras onboard flash with the "Scott Murray" diffuser on the end of the lens.
I've been doing similar and spending an hour out in the scrub waiting for birds. Very hot here today (well, 38deg anyway) so saw & heard very few birds
Yeah, been hot and sticky here too lately, looks like we will get rain tomorrow, thank goodness.
I have a lot of birds here but they are high up in the treetops. Too far for my 70-300 to get a good shot, might have to bite the bullet and buy a Tamron 150-600. Probably as soon as I get one, the birds will all disappear

I am finding that now I have a bigger lens the birds are further away lol
