For me that's too restrictive a crop. It highlights the subject, but it gives them nowhere to go. What I like about mine, and maybe it's because I know how they move around there, is that the wider crop gives you the feeling of the "dance floor" that they operate on. With just the bird I'd be OK with the closer crop, as I did with the other shot. But I can see why you'd see it differently.
In no way, is there a right or wrong about cropping. I'll just explain why I thought I'd like it cropped.
As much as I tried to focus my attention to the bird and the bee in your version, my eyes were constantly going to the red flower in the top right corner. I don't know if it's the space and the color contrast between the green and the red, but I can't stick to the bird. But that's just me, and it's your shot and I fully respect your taste and opinion.
