From 5:30 pm to just about now 12:30 AM I just could not log and kept getting the white "can't find server" error message. tried with Google Chrome, Safari, Tried with my Window computer IExplorer, Opera, Nothing worked. Tried at my GF's place (different computer and address) din't work.

I called in my ISP provider, and at one time they could not get anything and got the same error I did but then they were OK. I was on the phone for over an hour with them and they said they were about 90% certain that it was something blocking at the Nikonites' end.

I find it terribly upsetting since when it happens, there is nothing I can do. I already tried everything...

I cleared my DNS cache, cookies etc. Nothing worked.

What gets me is that about 5 minutes ago I tried again and Bingo, everything is back to normal as if nothing had happened. Really weird.

When I got home this afternoon, I couldn't log onto the forum. I cleared the cache on my computer, still couldn't log on.
I turned the computer off for about an hour or 2 while I cooked dinner, now I can log on.
I am hoping I am all good now, fingers crossed.

I don't know which time zone you're in, but last night at around 12:30 Eastern NY time, everything came back to normal. Seems to be a time sensitive thing for me at least. My ISP denies it could come from them, but some people say differently. I'll have to wait and see if things clear up by themselves and try with another ISP if my problem returns. I'll probably drop at a Tim Horton with Wi-fi to see if it is just my ISP and not my computer that is being bounced around.

Marcel, here is something easy to try. Back at work, the guys used to use this site to visit 'educational' [cough] sites that were blocked by the company. Anonymouse.org When you get a period of this site not working, try it. Nikonites will look a little funny because the ads don't load right, but it works. Using this anonymiser might help you confirm your isp is unknowingly blocking this site or pointing you wrong somewhere.

Thanks Nick, just what I was looking for. I knew I could setup a Google DNS connection but I find it a little scary to change all my connection configuration. The site you recommended could the proof I was looking for to argue some more with my ISP's service dept.

If you have windows you might want to play with the tracert command. (there is a mac equivalent, but not familiar) I don't know enough to help you troubleshoot, but it might be interesting for you. You open a command prompt window, it should be under Accessories.

Type tracert nikonites, com in the command window (I used a comma so it didn't turn into a forum link, use a period). It will return to you the path your request took. I can't help you with the results, way over my head, but the path will not always be the same. Some of the points will be your isp's equipment, some are various carrier connections and you should end at the server hosting nikonites. Here is my result:

Tracing route to nikonites.com [174.132.134.35]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

17 59 ms 57 ms 57 ms 23.86.84ae.static.theplanet.com [174.132.134.35]

Trace complete.

If yours hangs up somewhere, I think you might be able to reverse search the various ip addresses to see if they belong to your isp. Domain Whois Lookup, Whois API & DNS Data Research - DomainTools

Or if the trace goes nowhere, I think that would definitely indicate an isp problem. Maybe try it while nikonites is working so you have something to compare with.

I didn't like an ad I saw when I first came to the Nikonites home page. It had a huge exclamation point and said something like Please Read--Important Message. It took me to a page that looked like the following. People who aren't familiar with Nikonites might start downloading the file.

To update my situation, I've had another interesting conversation with my ISP's service center. It only took an hour and a half this morning. They tried to convince me that it was not their problem but they had to finally agree to take the blame. Apparently they might not have cleared some cache in their system or are blocking our website's server for some obscur reason. So, they will talk with their engineers and try to figure out what they can do.

In the meantime, the service person advised me that I should be using Google's server. So, I changed my DSN settings and BINGO, I was able to connect right away. I think my ISP's server was still trying to access Nikonites with the old server's address.

So thanks to all who helped me. In a way, I've learned a few things now but am sure glad to be able to connect whenever I feel like it, not just in the middle of the night.

For Ironwood, you can change to Google's DNS on your Mac. Open your system preference panel, click on connections, advanced, DNS and there is a little plus sign in the bottom left corner. Click on it and then add the google's DNS: There are two of them:

8.8.8.8 and then 8.8.4.4. This has worked for me so I don't see why it should do the trick for you too.

Thanks again for all your help.

Was uploading to various threads this evening. 2 uploaded no problem but when I tried to upload to Trees my files just disappeared from the screen and they never did upload even after several attempts. Does anyone have an idea what may have caused that to happen?

The web just did a big hiccup -- many US area connections were down till a few minutes ago.

Thanks Marcel, but my mac seems to be fine now. Since I cleared the cache yesterday, and rebooted, it seems to be working good.
I shall keep my fingers crossed that I don't have any more problems, but if I do, I will try your suggestion.

@jdeg - John, I'm still having problems with photos, but I can view most of them now except for snaphappy. Her photos lock up my P/C for some reason.

I've been without power for a couple days now. Luckily I'm staying warm but have limited access to internet stuff. If there is anything urgent please send me a pm.

Staying warm is most important. Hope you get your power back soon.

More issues tonight. When I first came in I got a page that has no template applied and no way to log in. I cleared cash and cookies and came back. I got logged in but now some photos are not showing up.
